Heartburn after gallbladder removal

Is heartburn after gallbladder removal common and how long does it last? I am 9 days post op and started experiencing bad heartburn a few days ago which can last all day. I'm already taking Nexium and OTC antacids aren't really working. My surgery sheet said diet: no restrictions, as tolerated. I had a english muffin with egg, cheese and ham this morning and have been suffering with heartburn since. Any suggestions? I don't see the surgeon until the week of Jan. 9th., the office is closed for the holidays. My GP's office is also closed for the holidays. It seems that I traded in one set of problems for another.

Re: Heartburn after gallbladder removal

Why would gallbladder removal cause heartburn? Prior to being sick, I was able to eat anything, I guess I don't understand the connection. I had oatmeal for breakfast, chicken soup for lunch and a plain turkey sandwich with an apple for dinner today and feel a lot better already. When will I be able to introduce fat back into my diet and why don't the surgeons tell you to avoid fat? Thanks!

Re: Heartburn after gallbladder removal

I have no idea why they tell people that but the reality is you need to be eating no or very low fat for 2-3 weeks and then slowly introduce fat back into your diet (like one pat of butter one day, an egg the next, etc.). The bile duct they leave sometimes takes a while to come "online"and you don't want to jump start it. You now see that the plain sandwich works. Take it slowly....
