How long does diarrhea last after gallbladder removal? Please answer!

I had my gallbladder out on the 13th. Almost two weeks ago. Last week, which was the first week after surgery, I was constipated from the pain meds, then I took two dulcolax and had diarrhea almost everyday up until Saturday. Which is odd because I took an Imodium last Friday night but still had watery bowels Saturday night. Since then I've been ok. I had my first bowel movement since then today. It was normal and soft (sorry gross) but not a lot.

Last week everything I ate went right through me with cramping. Since Sunday I've been eating more........turkey sandwiches, grilled chicken, brown rice, bananas, even some fat free ice cream and I've been ok...yesterday AND today I had a ceasar salad with creamy dressing, cheese, and buttery croutons, and it hasn't given me diarrhea. I also drank coffee this morning, two big cups, and some fiber one cereal.

Is the diarrhea pretty much over with then? Because I go back to work on Monday and I am nervous, even though I've been good since Saturday.....I hear some people have diarrhea the rest of their lives after gallbladder removal, but if it's been since Saturday for me without any, this is a good sign right? I went to the doctor yesterday for my post op and they told me diarrhea could be permanent. I SURE HOPE NOT. But then they also said it just takes time for your body to get used to not having a gallbladder. I am scared the diarrhea is going to come back! I've been ok, just a bit gassy.

Any thoughts? Anyone experience this? I know everybody is different. I would love to hear some experiences similar to mine.

Hi I really don't want to worry anyone but I think I should share my story ... I had my gallblader removed in 2002 and every year my diarrhea gets worse the bloating the cramps it's horrible I can not even travel. I am nervous just to go to the store . Can't even think of going out to eat dinner . I asked my doctor after surgery if it would go away they said " oh yes don't worry just take Imodium every time u go." I said for the rest of my life?... I read taking calcium helps so I take it but it doesn't help a lot . I'm so upset with all this I rather have suffered the stone pains then be going through this . I'm really sorry if I scared you or anyone else but it's the truth I suggest read as much as you can on this and maybe just maybe you will find something that works for you..

Stay as fat free as you can for 2-3 weeks and that should make things go easier once you slowly start back on fats. Most people have no problem if they ease back into fats. Those who don't stay low fat for a while often have trouble getting it under control. The general average is abou 5% for those with less than stellar outcomes on a permanent basis. I'd stick to plain chicken or turkey sandwiches for the first week back at work just to give your system a little more time. It worked for me and I never had any trouble.
