Patellar Tendonitis That's Not Getting Better - General Health Message Board

My sophmore year of high school (I'm a senoir now) I was playing football (I play Varsity for my school) and hit a guy wierd while playing defense. I fell on my knees very hard and they immediately began to swell up. They were so big I couldn't even bend them. I was like this for about four days before I told my trainer (I forced my knees to bend to get in my stance). He had me off from football icing for about two weeks untill the swelling stopped and then gave me knee pads that I used under my football pads. Those pads stopped the swelling but my knees still felt horrible, especially when I bend them. Now I can't bend them all the way and it hurts to lock my knees and I can't kneel for too long without them swelling up. I have problems, sometimes, putting wieght on them and if I get hit in either knee it feels like my entire body goes numb on that side for like 10-15 seconds and then hurts like crazy for a day or two. I ice all the time and take IB Profun (don't quote me on the spelling) at least once a day but I still have all of these symptoms. Do you think I should see a doctor about this? The only problem with seeing a doctor now is football. I don't want to let down my team and lose my spot on the starting line. Do you think seeing a doctor would be worth it?

Without a doubt you should see a doctor. Patellar tendonitis that is not treated can result in degeneration of the tendon. If you haven't seen a doctor, how do you know that your problem is patellar tendonitis? Prolonged use of ibuprofen can be harmful. Playing football now is not worth the pain and suffering you may have later on in life. You could be doing permanent damage.
