About 2 months ago I noticed I'd developed a swallowing problem were it felt like I had a lump stuck in the back of my throat just below my adams apple every time I swallowed. Two months further down the line and the feeling is still there and no better than it was two months previous.
I've now noticed if I try to couch it up from the back of my throat with a deep couch it makes me feel sick, to the point were I have actually been sick bringing up what I can only describe as a jelly type substance with stringy dark bits in it. Might also be described as looking like a jelly mucus type substance. Iíve also been having some nagging pains in my left side also this last week which I thought was near my kidney. After going to the doctors though he said it was not near my kidney and after checking my throat referred me to a throat, ear and nose specialist to take a deeper look because he could not see anything himself on inspecting my throat. As far as the pain in my side went he just did not really seem bothered about that at all.
My breathing is normal and I have no problem eating and swallowing things. But it makes me feel sick all the time and ill because of it. It feels like I have a fairball stuck in the back of my throat all the time. I was a heavy smoker until two 5 days ago when I packed in and have not smoked a cigarette since. Iíve just turned 40 years old and previously smoked for many years. So as you can imagine Iím thinking the worse in it possibly being throat cancer or a tumour of some sort.
I must add that I do have a ear problem that leekís puss from time to time which Iíve have had all my life and I also have a few bad teeth with need taking out by the dentist to be honest (real fear of dentists Iím sorry to say). So there could be other underlying problems to be honest. But the feeling of having a lump in my throat even though I canít feel anything is really bugging me being it just makes me feel sick when I try to couch it up on purpose.
I had something similiar and was told it was "globus" from anxiety! And I did what you did, I would try to "bring it up" and would actually start to gag! It really felt like a lump of puke stuck there, it was so wierd! The location in my throat seemed to trigger the gag reflex too. Is it there constantly? I didn't have it constantly, it would just appear there, stay there a while (like a few minutes, then go away a few minutes, then return.) Other times it would feel like I was wearing a choker and that it was pressing on that part of my throat, that could last all day and that would be constant. But it wasn't the pukeball (or like you said, hairball) feeling at that point.
I would definitely go to the ear, nose and throat doctor and have anything structural checked out. I've heard of reflux problems causing this and that can be checked with over the counter meds for acid problems such as tagamet. My doctor recommended taking it for 3-4 days and see if the problem got better. You can do this while you're waiting to see the specialist for your throat. If it does help then it's probably an acid issue. Do you have any other stomach issues such as belching, bloating, or burning sensation?
I think that sunlover has a good point about the anxiety thing. My brother has a lot of anxiety and stress and he has complained about the lump in his throat for years. There is nothing wrong with him it's just anxiety. If your really worried about it and have more different symptoms see your Dr.
