Painful circles on my tongue

For a couple of years, I've been sporadically getting dark circles that appear on the end of my tongue. They feel painful, almost like an ulcer (canker sore), but they aren't open sores. Usually, they are triggered by eating salty or acidic foods and they take a week or so to go away. And they are always in the same place, at the front on the right-hand side. Any suggestions as to what they are or how to get them to go away?

Re: Painful circles on my tongue

Check out geographic tongue. I have it as well, and there's nothing that can be done about it. It's an autonomic reaction, but not allergic.

I keep my fingers out of my mouth...such as licking them to turn pages, eating..etc. That's helped tremendously. But, sometimes lipsticks will trigger them, extremely spicy foods, dentist visit from the gloves..etc.

It's no where as bad as it used to be...at times almost my whole tongue was affected.

It's not a big deal, and if the pain bothers you try using OraJel for the mouth. It has zinc in it, as well as numbing agent.

Stress can exacerbate the symptoms.

Check it out and see if you fit the profile. If it is, become conscious about how many times you put your fingers in your mouth...and see if that helps.

Best to you,
quincy

Re: Painful circles on my tongue

Hi, I also have geographic tongue but it doesn't hurt me. It just looks like a map when you look at it. It seems to be better if I take my vitamins. I also use a tongue scraper and I think that helps. Good Luck.

Go to and buys some Gly-Oxide. It works wonders on the spots on the tongue as well as canker sores. I get them too. All you do is swish it for about 30 seconds and spit it out.

Re: Painful circles on my tongue

Thanks everyone. I have investigated geographic tongue, since this was the first thing my doctor thought it might be. The main things that were inconsistent with what I have and that were the pain I get that isn't present in geographic tongue and also the fact that I always have it in the exact (or very close) same place every time, whereas geographic tongue moves around a bit. And these are almost perfectly formed circles, rather than the irregular shape of geographic tongue.

Aus - Where can I get some of the Gly-Oxide? I'll be heading to the US soon so can probably pick some up over there when I go.

Gly-Oxide can be purchased at any drug store or a walmart kind of store
