What is this?! I just ate some walnuts while I was making bread with them in it, and this time the back of my throat felt rather sore and a bit swollen. I didn't feel all that great afterwards either. Other times, they've just made my mouth really itchy. I've noticed that bananas do this to me too. Could this be a food allergy? I'm so used to hearing about food allergies where people stop breathing and can die, but not an itchy mouth/sore throat/general bad feeling from eating something.
It most certainly could be an allergy......and what you're "used to hearing" is anaphylaxis. One exposure to introduce it to the body, the next can be death. It does happen. But, you have had warnings....HEED them well!
The threat is real.....and if you suspect you can't eat walnuts or bananas because of a reaction..each exposure can make the next reaction much worse.
Get to your doctor get tested and get medically prepared to know the proper meds to have on hand for when this happens....
Don't wait. Food allergies are not to be ignored...especially since you've already had a few warnings.
Keep us posted as to the outcome.
plus, don't eat ANYTHING with walnuts or bananas in them.
Best to you,
It's all a matter of perspective!
That is the reaction I get to certain foods also. It's definitely an allergic reaction, and any time you get an allergic reaction to a food, you should definitely steer clear of it (as the previous poster said). Do you get a reaction from strawberries, or any other fruit?
I'm allergic to some raw nuts (such a hazelnuts, but not walnuts) and some fresh fruit (apples, pears, pineapple, plums, peaches, nectarines, cherries, kiwi). I've met people who have the exact opposite allergy -- they can eat all of the fruits and nuts that I can't, but they can't eat the fruits and nuts that I can (walnuts, bananas, oranges, strawberries, etc.). Interestingly, we all can eat these foods if they are cooked or processed in some way. For me, I can eat things like baked apples, any canned fruit, etc. -- as long as it's not fresh).
In any case, I would advise you to stay away from anything that gives you an itchy mouth and swollen throat -- that's bad news. See an allergist about it if you're concerned.

Allergic sensitivities and reactions are really odd in that they can (and do) vary from one person to another.
They can occur virtually to any food, but in general most reactions are caused by a limited number of foods. The most common include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, peanuts and yes indeedy, tree-grown nuts such as walnuts.
Reactions to bananas are rarer but not unheard of.
Steer clear of both as wisegirl and quincy suggest!
