I think I broke my sternum

The bone that is at the spot where your ribs stop? (I think its your sternum).

Anyway, is it possible to break it? I just got home and was driving for about and hour, and sat down here and it hurts like heck to breath and move around. This isn't some little "oh I can deal with it I'm tough" kind of pain, this hurts like crazy. Could it be broken?

breathing in a lot hurts, and so does moving around. What could it be? What would you recommend?

If it makes a difference, I'm 18.

Re: I think I broke my sternum

Morning,
Just stumbled upon your post. I just recently discovered that little bone and have learned that it is highly subject to arthritis and inflamation.
You might do a search on the words 'costo chondritis' and 'xiphoid process'.
costo, costal, costa all are variances of word. Apprently the cartlidge around sternum gets inflamed.
Hope this helps. cj

Re: I think I broke my sternum

Sure, it's possible to break it. But it would require a large force. They don't just snap on their own (unless there is a tumor or infection weakening the bone). If you broke it, you would have done something (probably something hitting you in the chest) and then immediately felt pain.
