Hives and Other Symptoms...

Hi all,

I'm a 44 year old male, and I have this "disorder" that really has me puzzled. I will probably see my doctor for it soon, but I thought I would educate myself a little first if possible.

Okay, for a little over a year or so, I have been having these attacks that usually happen at night ...wakes me up rather quickly. I wake up with terrible abdominal pain, cold sweats, severe Hives, and Diarrhea. The whole ordeal is absolutely terrible ...I mean really bad!!! Over time, this seems to have increased in frequency from maybe once every couple of months, to about once every month, sometimes even a couple times a month. So far, I have not been able to attribute any of this to anything (food, etc.). It just seems to happen, and always wakes me in the middle of the night (no daytime issues).

Has anyone heard of similar symptoms? I'm pretty confused.

Thanks

Re: Hives and Other Symptoms...

Abdominl pain and cold night sweats can be a sign of serious illness. I wouldnt wait to long before seeing a doc. Leukemia often presents itself with night sweats and abdominal pain, as does HIV. Both can be chronic and symptoms can continue for many months or even years before being DX. Im sure its nothing that serious but u never know. Sounds more like it might be some type of allergic reaction to something.

Re: Hives and Other Symptoms...

Thanks for the thoughts I too have wondered about allercic reactions, but since this has been happening to me for over a year, I've had plenty of chances to experiment and have found absolutely nothing that seems to trigger these attacks. I do find it a little odd that it almost always happens between 2am and 5am or so ...like when you're sleeping your best! I've even wondered if it had something to do with my stomach because I do take Prevacid due to severe heartburn/acid reflux ...have to take the meds as soon as I get up, or I'll be paying for it by 11am or so. As for the night sweats, I don't think it's "night sweats" as one would think of it being as with Leukemia. This is definitely associated with the attacks themselves. When the Hives and everything let up (thank God for Benedryl), all the other symptoms go away.

I just don't know. Something's going on, and yes, I will definitely see my doctor soon.

Hey, has anyone ever had like flushing of their face that can last for an hour or even a few hours? This happens to me at odd times, usually during the day. My face feels hot (almost stings), and when I look in the mirror, sure enough, my cheeks are red. I wonder if I could tie this whole thing up into a nice little bundle! Would be nice.

Thank you all for your support.

Re: Hives and Other Symptoms...

because of the hives, you could be having an alergic reaction to something. maybe something you are eating. i would start by keeping a list of everything you are eating and drinking. get to the dr. something is going on here that you need to find out what.

my brother in law suddenly started getting hives, and eventually they became so bad, the wife had to get him to the er. he had become severly alergic to any and all over the counter meds. acidamisin (sp)

so, i would get to the doc and find out now what is causing all this. good luck

Re: Hives and Other Symptoms...

Yeah, I had to go to the ER one night because it was so bad. The whole thing is extremely violent when it happens ...I dread it!

I actually have kept a log for almost a year now, and there is absolutely nothing that forms a common thread. This is the main reason why I haven't seen a doctor yet; he's going to want details. I just don't know what to tell him.

Thanks

Re: Hives and Other Symptoms...

well, he can send you to a specialist that will test you for everything under the sun. this is what my brother in law had to do before they found it was something in all over the counter meds he was alergic too. he scared me half to death one night, they called me to come sit with the baby while they went to the er. he looked like the elephant man he was so swollen up with hives. but you should go to the dr. ask to be sent to a specialist to figure this out. good luck
