Taking medications with water?

Everybody says that you have to take medications with a full glass of water. Does anybody know what happens if you do not? If I only use a quarter cup of water, will the medication still work? Or if I have a glass of wine and use it to get my medication down, will this make the medication not work anymore?

It's recommended that you take it with a full glass of water because the water helps the medicine break down and flow to where it needs to go quicker. Water helps the medicine flush through you!

its really not a good idea taking meds with wine, or any alcohol, alcohol can reduce its affect

Re: Taking medications with water?

I once had a friend who because of kidney problems was only allowed a small amount of water to wash down her pills. I DO know from experience that if you swallow a pill without water (like before bedtime) YOu wake up the next morning and it hurts like heck 'cuz it gets stuck in the throat/esophagus. Most people don't drink enough water anyway, so I would think it'd be best to drink a full glass.

I guess it depends on the medicine. I've taken an antibiotic with nothing, just my saliva. I've taken Xanax with just 2 swallows of water (still worked, nothing happens) But ones that SAY to take with water, I would do that - maybe it's too irritating to the stomach or some may tend to expand and you want to make sure it's all out of the esophagus before it expands (like a fiber pill). So my advice is if it SAYS to do it, I would.

Re: Taking medications with water?

Well it definitely won't HURT you if you don't take an antibiotic without a full glass of water, but it MIGHT just MIGHT make the medicine not as effective or not effective at all.....Just drink the whole glass of water, and if you're not going to drink a whole glass of water, at least use water.

Never use milk or an alcoholic beverage to make the medicine go down, and more importantly it's not good to use absolutely nothing to make the medicine go down....

I sound like Mary Poppins.....A glass full of water makes the medicine....go down.....

:-D
