BURNING MOUTH? OR YEAST INFECTION? OR Lichen planus?
One Doctor has diagnosed me with Burning Mouth Syndrome. I do have all the classic symptoms. I am concerned there is more to it. One symptom I have not of burning mouth is a cronic sore throat, “numb/coated” tongue,
After exploring the internet I now believe i may have one or all three of the following:
yeast infection in the mouth (thrush, or candisis)
Lichen planus (oral and skin)
Burning Mouth syndrome
MY SYMPTOMS:
tremendous STRESS
tongue sores-splits (now gone away)
burning tongue, roof of mouth and gums
chornic sore throat
dry mouth
rash (one occured on inner thighs, now on upper back)
MY HISTORY:
Tongue Sores
In mid September, I came down with sores on my tongue. This may have been sexually transmitted. My doctor said they were canker sores and nothing could be done. He referred to canker sores as Herpes 1. Upon investigation, all information tells me that herpes one symptoms are COLD sores, which occur outside of the mouth. So cross that one out, hopefully. They didn’t look like the pictures I saw of canker sores. These sores were splits on the tongue. On my next visit he felt it wasn’t herpes. The mouth specialist said the same thing. They both said there is no test for herpes one.
BURNING MOUTH APPEARS:
For the next THREE months these sores would go away for a day or two and then return. After the first few weeks, another symptom appeared: a strong burning sensation on the top of my tongue, roof of my mouth, and inner gum lines. Also DRY MOUTH. Also a very sore throat.
These symptoms would sometimes appear singlely or all together.
On Februay 5, I was referred to an ears/nose/throat specialist. By this time the tongues sores had gone. i complained of swollen tongue and sore throat. He said he come back when the sores appeared again.
Only one mouth sore occurred since that time. Only for three days. But the burning mouth has taken over.
When I returned to him in early March, he diagnosed me with Burning Mouth Syndrome. He gave me SALVE to treat symptoms. It works, but yogurt (much much cheaper) works better.
WHY IT OCCURS:
I read a posting which was enlightening: A doctor has found out the reason why people get this disorder. It has to do with the nerve that runs from the tip of you tongue. It is believed that due to a viral infection, damage to the nerve happens,
This could be me. I had some viral infection (tongue sores) that turned into burning mouth due to nerve damage.
MY QUESTIONS:
Could a reoccurring viral infection on my tongue have lasted from mid September through mid January? Why reoccuring?
Could my throat problem (and burning tongue) be a result of a yeast infection? And how can this be treated? Could a throat Doctor examining my mouth have missed this? Could a yeast infestation be “invisible”?
How can I find out if this is either Burning Tongue Syndrome or Lichen planus (oral and skin)?
MEDICINE AND MONEY
I have already spent a fortune for very few answers. I have no money and am in great debt. I am still in the dark. I realize the complexity of all this.....but the Doctor seems to be guessing, such as the throat being due to reflux, which doesn’t even occur anymore. And because this is puzzling and he has no answer, I seem to be a “pain in the rump.”
HOW CAN I GET HELP FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY WITHOUT SPENDING ANOTHER FORTUNE. I HAVE HEATH INSURANCE, BUT EACH TIME MAKE CO PAYMENTS AND PURCHASE DRUGS THAT ARE NOT HELPING ....MEANS I’M SPENDING MONEY I DON’T HAVE FOR NOTHING!!????
Re: BURNING MOUTH? OR YEAST INFECTION? OR Lichen planus?
My mom was diagnosed a couple of months ago with lichen planus in her mouth. She had a lot of the same run around as you. She finally had a biopsy taken of a sore on her gums and the dr. said it was lichen planus. They said that was the only way to find out what it was. Hope you find some answers, I know how frustrating it is. Just by what my mom was and still is going thru. Good Luck.
Re: BURNING MOUTH? OR YEAST INFECTION? OR Lichen planus?
HI, I had just about everything you have had. Mine started late Oct, and ran through End of Jan, maybe February. My tongue was swollen & sore, roof of mouth burned, back of throat burned, gums burned. I saw my dr twice, and ENT once, a trip to ER when swelling got really bad, and dentist twice. They came up with no diagnosis for me either. I gave up on the drs, although the dentist seemd to be the best help of all of them. LIke you, I suspected thrush, lichen planus and various other conditions. It can be very frustrating to be so miserable without anyone helping at all. I had read somewhere that it was possibley due to an allergic reaction, which can cause the BUrning Mouth Syndrome. So I gave up all foods that 1)made it worse 2)had preservatives & other chemicals in them, 3) bought only tootpastes & mouthwashes that contained no alcohol, sulfates, chemicals. There are also good dry mouth tootpaste & mouthwashes that seemed to help me.
Mine also started with an itchy rash on legs and abdomen, which the dr prescribed Zyrtec for...and bang! That's when the mouth problem started. Zyrtec is very drying, and whatever causes BMS, whether viral or something else, took hold. It finally resolved, but I still avoid problem foods and chemicals as best I can.
I also have TMJ with night grinding & clenching of teeth, so that could account for the nerve theory, I guess.
Have you seen your dentist? A good oral exam by someone who sees mouths all the time might be helpful? And just an exam shouldn't be too expensive.
Best of Luck to you, I can totally relate to what you are going through.
