Ideal pulse rate?

I've been exercising and eating very healthily for around 6 months. Before I started, my resting pulse was around 95 (I was very unhealthy, unfit, and high-stress). A couple of months ago, it was around 70. I measured it today, and it was 61.

What is the ideal? How low should it get? I'm 23, 5'5, 154lbs, if that helps.

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

61 is great! The lower it is, the more fit you are (well, I don't mean 35 or 40! But I've already had 54 and so has my husband, and we aren't even fit and it's hit that low.. and we are healthy. So you are doing fine!

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

Mine has hit 48 before. I run college cross-country so I do get quite a bit of exercise each day however my eating habits are for the most part pretty bad. Anyway 61 isn't bad at all

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

61 is very good. Mine is between 55 and 50. When your heart beats slower it means the body is pumping the blood more affectively around the body as opposed to a slow - or shallow - heart rate that is making feeble efforts at circulating the blood.

Good for you going from 95 to 61 - that is GREAT!!

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

Normal pulse for average people over the age of 10 is 60-100 beats per minute.
Normal pulse for athletes is is 40-60 beats per minute.

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

You are so lucky to get your pulse down so low. Mine is around 100 and the doctor said it needs to be 70.

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

Normal is usually between 70 and 90, with ideal being anywhere near 72. The only area of concern is if you get below around 45, or above 110.

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

Thanks a lot for the help! My pulse has never been as low as this, so it freaked me out a little. It's nice to know that 61 is a good number, and now I have a better idea of what would be too low. Thanks again .

How did you get it down? Mine was stuck at 121 for months. They ran every test known to man and found nothing. I take a beta blocker.

Re: Ideal pulse rate?

Mine has always been around 95 and I think that is a little high. I even ran three days a week for many years and lifted weights. I am 5' 6" 125 lbs female. No matter how much exercise I did it never went down. I wonder why. My husband says I have a heartbeat like a bird really fast. I also started taking a beta blocker for headaches and it lowered my heart rate to around 80 for just a couple months then it went back up again.
