Ive been having issues latley with a ringing in my right ear. This is usaully accompanied by a numbness in my face and neck. Latley, however, the numbness can happen any time and the ringing in my ear is usaully preceeded by a strong headache on the right side of my head right around where my hairline starts. Ive been to a doctor and he did a non contrast ct scan which thankfully turned up negative. I feel Ive been driving my poor doctor nuts with all my complaints. I do have an appointment with an ENT at the end of this month, but it gets worse and worse... Anyone have any ideas, or expierence anything similar?
Well, it could be anything from tintinitis to a brain tumor (which is why the doctor did the CT scan - thank God it was negative). I'm glad that you have an appointment with an ENT specialist, however, the end of the month seems a long time to wait with the problem getting worse and worse. Certainly another option is a neurologist (in the event it is a neurological problem). I think it's interesting that the ringing in the ears is preceded by a headache. Could be a migraine. What's the frequency? Have you been evaluated for BEll's palsey (a transitional paralysis of the face usually related to 6 or 7th facial nerve). Have you ridden for long distances with the car window open and the wind blowing on your face? How about an air conditioner blowing on you? Have you been involved in an accident and sustained a whip lash injury? ANy falls? Contact sports? SOrry for all the questions? I'm just trying to narrow this down for you. cflas
Cflas: Ill give you a little background
Im a 24 yo male.. I had this problem about 2 years ago and the ringing was always accompanied by lightheadedness and nothing else it eventually went away. The first time it happened it was the worst, I know I panic when I have these episodes so that might be a culprit as well. About three months ago it started again accompanied by these new symptons. Anyway the ringing is usaully high pitched, and has only been preceded by a headache once, and at the time the ringing was mid pitched and strong, that was today actaully. I have not been evaulated for Bells palsey, but the numbness in my face is pretty light, I can still fell myself touching my face and I am retain full movement of my lips, eyes and cheeks. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as falls.. No car accidents or air conditioning.
My primary doctor seems to think it may be related to a trigger point in my back but massages and a shot of novacaine to the area didnt seem to help much.
Ive also had many basic nerological examines, the kind they do if they think you may have sustained brain damage due to stroke or interupted blood flow to the brain. I have never seen a nurologist for this.
I do have a lump in the back of my neck that my doctor assures me is nothing. Thats the primary resaon for the ENT visit. According to my primary the lump is just a lymph node and is normal. However, Ive never noticed it before and it feels very firm and stretches out in either side. It also doesnt really move and is painless. This is however is, off topic I hope.
Thanks again for your help, any info would be much appreciated as I am driving my self nuts till the end of the month.
One more question. The ct scan I had was non-contrast. What does that mean? and would that manner of scan still identify tumors?
I have a lump in the front of my neck, below my ear and jaw that is causing face numbness. It feels like i got a shot of novacain from the dentist. I feel pressure in my ear but no ringing. The lump has been growing slow, had it for 2 years, so I think it took this long to cause symptons. Drs were not concerned until my face went numb.
Had a ultrasound this morn and was given antibiotics last week. Was told ultrasound was not the best to see this kind of lump and if the antibiotics dont work will need MRI. Does anyone know about that?
Keep us posted and I will let you know what I find out also.
I've been having the same problem as well. It started at the end of January. Tightness all on the leftside of the head (just above the ear); some facial numbness on the left side of my face just over the eye, cheekbone, nostril, and fullness of the leftear. I went to the ENT who said it sounds like congestion. After taking Allegra (to no avail) and a prescribed nasal spray (to no avail), I've decided to just relax and let things heal themselves. I am guilty of popping my ears often during stressful times or just trying to clear out my ears if I've been in a loud environment. I know that popping my ears often can trigger those TMJ like symptoms, so I've made a very conscious effort to relax because I am having some digestive problems that started this past December and the ear popping had become a nervous habit. If you're also popping yours ears, just relax and don't do it. TMJ can be a result of nervous habits (teeth grinding, clinching, etc..). Now that I've made the effort to relax, My numbness is curbing and the fullness in my ear is nearly gone. Relaxing helps everything.
My wife says I grind and chomp my teeth together at night, and it seems I do it pretty hard. I've woken in the morning to blood on my pillow sometimes. Its hard to believe these symptons are just from TMJ. They seem very severe to me. I will keep this thread updated though.
To anyone following this post, thank you for your information. I have a few new symptoms to add to my list. As I am having these "attacks" the more sever ones pring on a shortness of breath. What are the chances that this may have something to do with my heart?
Wow, you're experiencing all of my recent experiences. From my research, I've found out that a clogged colon can cause the gas and toxins to go into your chest area and give you that "shortness of breath" sensation. A clogged colon can also cause your ear problems as well, such as congestion. You should check out some of my other posts. Try get to the root of that problem asap before you get to some severe pain. Unfortunately PAIN is the last thing to happen. Your body is giving you these signals; act on them before you get anymore pain. You should see a gastroenterologist and see if you can get an abdominal x-ray. Keep posting with updates. You'll be amazed at the problems that a clogged colon could cause. Do a search on the internet such as..."clogged colon" (be sure to include the quotation marks as well).
This may have nothing to do with your situation....
I have numbness in one side of my face, sometimes almost feeling cold which last 5 - 15 minutes. It usually proceeds a bad headache which starts in the back of my head/ neck and moves forward. I also have light sensitivity. I recently was diagnosed with Migraines. The last episode was preceded by dizziness and ear pain, then the numbness and headacke. Sometimes no headache follows at all.
Hope it gets all figured out.. nothings worse than not knowing what the problem is.
i get this as well although they are migraines as jasiusmom has mentionned. i've had it since i was about 7 but not only does my face go numb (it's the first thing to go numb though..) the rest of my body will go numb, headaches, oras, ringing in my ears, and a list of other things too. though the shortness of breath.. unless it's a panick attack in response, or anxiety, i'm not sure about that. anything is possible really.
