Is eating shrimp tail shells safe?

My friend has always eaten shrimp, and along with the shrimp, he has eaten the tail shell--the part that everyone I know discards. It doesn't seem that it has ever harmed him, but does anyone know if this is safe?

Re: Is eating shrimp tail shells safe?

My husband has done this for years and he is still alive and kickin at 46.i don't know why someone would want to try and eat something that is almost impossible to chew but they do,go figure.I doubt there would be any complications, other than possibly choking on something that you cannot chew up real well. But this hasn't hurt my husband at all and he has done this like forever.FB

It's a very common practice in areas where shrimp are a local seafood..Lousiana, for example. Personally, I don't care for them but lots of my cajun relatives do.

If they're still alive I would say it's a not a problem. But why they would want to eat the tail shell is beyond me. Go figure!

eww! I can't even imaging eating the tail! But hey, if he's still alive and kickin, no harm no foul! My dad will eat a whole apple, core and all. Maybe its a guy thing?!

Re: Is eating shrimp tail shells safe?

Thanks so much everyone! I'm sure he'll be happy to find out it's not harming him to eat the shrimp tails, and that I'm just a worrier! :-)
