Hard lump on back of Head. PLEASE HELP

Im 16 years old and about 4 months ago i noticed a hard bump on the back of my head. The bump is hard about 1 square inch and sticks out of my head about 1 cm. It does not hurt when touched and has not bothered me, but since last week i have had a strange feeling around the area where the bump is.

Does anyone have any ideas what this is or if i should go get it looked at by a doctor?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

I would have it looked at. It could be a hair follicle that has become infected or possibly a cyst.

It is always good to have these things looked at.

Let us know.

Re: Hard lump on back of Head. PLEASE HELP

I have two, one on each side. I am 46 years old and have had them for as long as I can remember. About a year ago the one of the left side got really sore (not the first time one of them became sore though) and I found about two weeks later that I had a sinus infection on that side. For the first time I told my doctor about them and was told they are lymph glands. This is the reason for the soreness when I got the sinus infection. So, I agree. It is probably not serious, but if the lump is feeling different right now you might want to get it checked out. It could be an infection somewhere in your body.

I also forgot to mention i have a sore throat. Do you think that could be a sign of some type of infection that could cause the lymph gland (if thats what it is) to feel different that usual?

Absolutely. You should have it checked in case you need to be put on an antibiotic.

Yes, a sore throat could cause your lymph nodes (glands) to swell. There a ton of things that can cause them to swell (you can find tons of info if you do an internet search on the subject). I had it happen to me a couple of weeks ago. Up until that point I didn't even know we had glands on the back of our heads! Until the left side swelled up and was EXtremely painful for me. I couldn't even lay down. At the same time I had a canker sore in my bottom lip. It turns out that even canker sores can be the cause of swollen glands! Who knew!!!

Do keep an eye on your sore throat though... Sore throat and swollen glands are the two main signs of strep throat. If it doesn't start getting better soon you probably want to see a doctor and have a strep culture done.

I agree. That sounds like what it probably is and if it is indeed strep, you do not want to mess with it. Strep can cause lots of other serious, long term problems if it is left untreated.
