Complete blindness for 1 minute+

Welp, I was on the bus today when I started feeling very nauseous. It was all I could do to not vomit. Soon my vision started fading out. Within a few seconds, everything was black. I was still completely conscious. I tried focusing on different things, turning my head to the bright outside and then away from it, and didn't notice any change in light, like the way you would be able to tell if the lights were on or off if your eyes were closed. During this time I was still fighting to not throw up.

The complete lack of vision lasted for a minute, maybe more, and then my sight gradually came back. As I got off the bus (I missed my stop while I couldn't see, so I got off at the next one), I noticed I was very wobbly, and couldn't balance well. Soon after, I started feeling better, and my vision came back to 100% within a minute or so.

A similar thing happened about five years ago, but I don't think my vision was gone for that long; if I remember correctly I couldn't see for about 10 seconds that time, and assumed I had just gone unconcious.

Last night, I drank alcohol, and was intoxicated. I'm sure the nausea is related to that, but the blindness? I've gotten sick before, but only lost my vision that one other time. I am a 21 year old male, and I am not on any medications.

Is a temporary, complete loss of vision not an uncommon thing for people who get nauseous, or do I have a problem?

Thanks,

Rammo

Have you seen aDoctor? Same thing happened to my son at your age , then a few years later we found out he had a brain cyst.

I would also have my doctor to check for hypoglycemia. It could have been brought on by the alcohol. I use to have black outs like that and the shakes real bad after drinking due to hypoglycemia. Best of luck.

Re: Complete blindness for 1 minute+

When my daughter was 15 she was in the JR ROTC and they had them standing there for a long period of time and she hadn't eaten all day, she told me that she started feeling really sick, like she was going to throw up, and that as she was walking to the front of the class to tell the teacher she was sick, her vision grayed out and she was literally feeling in front of her, swinging her hands in front of her so she wouldn't walk into anyone because she couldn't see! So it sounds like a common thing with almost passing out. Like the other poster said, hypoglycemia could definitely do that. A drop in your blood pressure could too. But if it's the "blindness" you are concerned about, it was in relation to the almost passing out that caused it.

Re: Complete blindness for 1 minute+

Have you been checked for Type 2 Diabetes?
Nausea, vision problems, etc. could be associated with blood sugar levels which could have been aggrevated by drinking
the comment on a brain cyst possible too. A cyst/tumor could place pressure on the optic nerve causing the vision loss which, in turn could cause nausea and loss of balance.
I'd get screened for Diabetes.
