Relief for Gout? - General Health Message Board

Can anyone tell me is there any natural, or over the counter medications for relief of gout.
My husband has gout in his right foot that flares up all the time unexpectedly and he hurts so bad.
For about 3 days now I guess it flared up in his ankle where it usually starts, his whole ankle was swollen and very painful like a sprained ankle sort of and now it has moved to the top of his foot, now his whole foot is tender and swollen and he can't hardly walk.
We have bought him the best ankle brace that we could find, I rub icy hot on it to help and he takes ibuprofen for the pain.
I have a foot soak machine that I have bought epsom salt also for him to soak his foot in but that really doesn't seem to help. He's tried that and ice packs on his foot and ankle where he hurts.
Anyone suffering from gout do you have any other suggestions.
Are there trigger foods that bring on attacks of gout. He's noticed now that if he eats mexican food with refried beans that usually the next day it flares up on him. Is that coincidence or are there really trigger foods?
Any other info on gout about causes, treatment, home treatments etc is greatly appreciated.

There is some type of cherries one with gout can eat to prevent the gout attacks. You might want to do a search on that. Also I have heard that pork and alcohol can trigger it. Best of Luck.

I suffer from gout. Have for many years. Have used everything from prescription drugs to natural remedies. On the side of prescription drugs, your husband would need a doctor to see him and have a prescription written for an anti-inflammatory drug or drugs. As for OTC, there are a number to choose from. I find ALEVE to work, though be careful, as too many even though having some benefits relieving pain, too many taken can cause problems. As for natural remedies, I personally use Black cherry juice concentrate and mix it with water. Recently a friend told me about what many people hold in high regard-that being the uise of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and organic Honey taken together.

The other side to help prevent gout entails a look at life style, food intake, alcohol consumption, and a good understanding of this condition.

Go see a doctor. Have a blood test done to check uric acid level in the blood.

A proper diet may help. No alcohol. Google "Gout diet"

There are several drugs that may help. Fortunatley, they
are cheap. For an acute attack like he is having, a few days of prednisone can provide relief. Presdnisone would cost less than 10 dollars. For long term, a drug like allopurinol (an old generic) can be used to lower uric acid levels in the blood. It costs me about 10 dollars at Costco for 90 days supply. It has been a godsend.
