I had an IV in the top outside part of my hand a few weeks ago. After the IV was removed I noticed that my entire outside of my hand was swollen. I don't know what caused the swelling but that has mostly gone down. Now the vein that had the needle feels hard and is very sore and sort of sticking up. My doctor said that I didn't have an infection but wasn't sure what was wrong. Has anyone had this before? I wonder if the vein heals on it's own.
taape.... just relax as it will get better. Whenever i give blood the vein on my arm is bruised for several days then disappears. My veins are easy to see as i lift weights so its easy to stick in it and yet it always bruises so just relax. later .....

What may have happened is that the fluid from the IV leaked out of the vein and into the surrounding tissues. That would explain the swelling. This can irritate the vein and it may take a while to recover. But it should get better eventually.
