Low Folate level

Doctor's office called to say that my daughter (13) has a low folate level. She had been sick off and on, for about a month prior, starting with a stomach bug, then cold type bugs, swollen glands, sore throat. What is folate? We are going to the doctor this afternoon for a follow up appointment.

Re: Low Folate level

Folate is from the vitamin B family and occurs naturally in food. Folate deficiency can be caused by anemia or when the body is using more folate than it is getting. Your daughter can take a supplement to help bring up her folate levels or eat more foods high in folate. You can do a google/yahoo search on folate and find foods that have it.

Re: Low Folate level

Went to the doc yesterday, daughter's iron level is low also, she will be taking a multi vitamin with iron daily. I did forget (I don't know how??!!!) to mention to doc, that she gets canker sores on the inside of her lip very frequently. So, I was wondering if there is a tie-in with the low folate levels? She does not go overboard on citrus anything, or salty foods, sour candies etc. I was told once about an ingredient in toothpaste that can cause cankers (whatever it's called that makes the toothpaste foam)
