Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

Someone said that you don't always know if you have a kidney infection, I thought one would. What do you think? Also, when people have kidney stones, does that mean they have an infection too?

Re: Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

Hi there :-)

When you have a kidney infection you do know something isn't quite right because you will be experiencing symptoms. In my case I had a UTI which developed into a Kidney infection and I had severe UTI symptoms. I didn't consider it oculd be a Kidney infection. Didn't even cross my mind.

If you think you may have a kidney infection - take a urine sample to your Doctor.

My symptoms were:

Fever
Abdominal pain.
Stabbing pain in lower back (both sides)
Urinating more frequently (literally stuck on toilet for 4 hours)
Bleeding.

Re: Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

I f you read my other post on this board, I think I passes a kidney stone last night. I do have abdominal tenderness and I feel a little bloated but I'm not running to the bathroom, I don't have the back pain (I did last night though!) and I just figure that the abdominal tenderness is due to passing the stone...maybe I'm wrong. I've never passed one before so I odn't know what to expect after one is passed. If someone can tell me, that would be really helpful. Was your abdominal pain pretty severe? Was it a gassy like feeling? A stabbing pain? what kind of pain was it. How long did you have your UTI? In a CBC do you know what the abbreviation is for the kidney's being checked and would something show up in that blood test? Thanks for your help. Figures I go through this on a weekend!

Re: Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

Hi Hun.

I've never had a kidney stone so I cant help you with that unfortunately but my UTI became severe within 3 days of first noticing symptoms and took a further 9 days to clear up completely.

The pain I experienced was very bad. It was like a sharp knife being stabbed into my sides and lower back every few seconds. I did have abdominal bloatedness and cramping in my tummy too.

I really don't know if it would show up in a Kidney blood test. I don't think it would unless it was severe but I'm not "well up" on Kindey blood tests so I cant help you with that either hun.

Re: Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

Thanks, I just have had so much stress going on, it's so hard to tell what originates from stress and what is really something to look at. I'm getting ready to travel and I just don't want any problems while away from home. I do have allergies and I have had a slight headache today but that could also be from stress/anxiety of my Uncle being put on life support, having family calling, etc..Haven't been through a trama like this before, so it is very stressful. I guess I am trying to figure out a way to stay out of the docs office but, I may just have to go. I just want to feel back to normal you know? Haven't been out of the house in days...just haven't felt like it.

Don't always put it down to stress ok. Your symptomatic and this usually isn't stress related unless its tiredness and headaches. So see your Doctor. Im sorry about your uncle and I hope hes better soon.

Re: Will you know if a kidney infection is present?

On your CBC look under WBC and see if that is High. Also if they tested creantine and it is greater then 1.2 see a doctor right away. These are both signs of infection but they do not BOTH have to be high.
