what's causing this pain?

Hello all.

I'm not sure where to post this query as I don't know what bracket it would come under!

About 7 years ago I was suddenly struck by intense pain halfway down my back on the right side. Midway between shoulder my blade and the bottom of my rib cage. The pain was very sharp and came in waves. It lasted about 20 minutes before slowly subsiding to nothing. It was severe enough to force me to lie down. The pain made me sweat. After, I felt I needed to belch a lot.

THis then took the pattern of repeating 2-6 times a year. Eventually, thinking it was gall stones or something, I went to see a specialist who sent me for a scan last year. Completely clear of stones apparently.

More recently My attacks are a little more frequent and leave me feeling sore for a few days after.

When the pain comes on, it comes from nothing to severe in a matter of a few seconds. The pain always starts in the same area, then spreads over my back and front, making me feel quite sick at times. It's always accompanied by belching afterwards.

Curiosly though, My sister has recently been in for a scan on her gall bladder/kidneys for a similar problem. She was given the all clear too!

I just wondered if anyone has any thoughts?

Re: what's causing this pain?

Hi.

I have read that the tests can give you the all clear, but that your gallbladder can still be "diseased" without even having any stones. I have heard of numerous people who had this problem with pain yet the Dr's couldn't find anything wrong with them, but when they finally convinced them to do the surgery and when they took the gallbladder out it was covered in adhesion's.

You should pursue this further and see if you can get another Dr to consider your gallbladder as a possibility of the pain.

Re: what's causing this pain?

Many thanks for your reply.

The more I look into it, the more the symptoms seem to point towards gall bladder. Although they always talk about lower abdomen pain, where as mine is always in the back and just a little in the front. That does pose a problem when googling: just typing in 'back pain' gives me millions of links for spinal problems!

Re: what's causing this pain?

Do you have any back problems at all or a old back injury? I have the pain you described once a week without fail, always in the evening and mine is caused by a old injury to my spine when I was 14 years old.
