Cough that is confusing

I am confused by a cough that seems to be related to several types of illness since it seems to change every few days.

I started with a very sore throat, low grade fever, accompanied by a dry cough and badly runny nose. The cough increased in frequency with some minor coughing up of phlegm over the next couple of days. The last few days, the cough was more like pertussis with coughing fits and gagging usually started by an irritating tickle in the back of the throat. I have awakened at night shot up in bed because it felt like I couldn't breathe and my throat felt closed. It took a couple of minutes for the coughing and breathing to calm down. Today I have a cough that is more like a barking cough. I was given antibiotics in January for what the doctor believed was pertussis, but the diagnosis was based on how I sounded and other symptoms, no definitive test was run. The cough sounded the same as the January pertussis cough for the last few days but seems to be changing. I am somewhat immune compromised because I had a valley fever (cocci) cavity the previous three years and a wedge resection surgery on my left lung. I had the surgery in Sept. and will be on anti fungal meds till the following Sept. I seem to catch every bug everyone in the family gets , so I have been sick pretty regularly.

I know they call pertussis the 100 day cough but is it the 4 month cough? Does pertussis become a barking cough after a few days? The doctor put me on antibiotics at the start of the fever since I have had so many problems with illness. The cost of going back to the doctor is more than I can afford at the moment so are there any thoughts out there??

You no doubt still have whooping cough and most likely pneumonia at this point.

I just got over whooping cough/pneumonia and it took 10 days of antibiotics to make a dent in it, plus I took prescription strength Mucinex called Dynex-La as well as Hycodan cough syrup. I was sick for 4 weeks and just now beginning to regain my strength.

Did you have chest x-rays, if not, you should.

With your lowered resistance, it will take you longer than a average person to overcome the whooping cough.

I think I have something simular. I am going on 5 months with this crazy dry cough that ends in gagging. If I do not cough it feels like my throat closes. I haven't slept in 5 months because the coughing at night is so violent. I lived in a place that had a lot of mold but I moved out 3 months ago. I have been to the doctor a lot and had chest XRays that came back clear. Now I have a stomach flu because my immune system is out of whack. It is driving me nuts!

Re: Cough that is confusing

I have had problems with extended chronic coughing in the past couple years. According to my doctor chronic coughing is typically caused by:

post nasal drip
allergies
asthma
acid reflux
Unfortunately, I found out I have all of the above (with my reflux having coughing as the main symptom) and it took a very long time to find a regimine to get them all under control at the same time.

I have also had pertussis. Not fun, but it eventually got better.

I have Allergies and at times had post nasal drip. I was referred to a lung specialist.
Someone told me there is a cough that lasts six months long its equal to the kennel cough a dog gets its common for humans to get it after a bad cold. Its not serious and goes away the 6th month. Anyone ever heard of it?
