Low Calcium.....anyone have this?

Hi,

My Mum called her GP yesterday and was told that her Calcium blood test is quite low.

She went to her GP nearly 2 weeks ago for muscle spasms and very painful cramps in her lower legs and hand. She's also been having pins and needles in her hands.

What causes low Calcium? I was hoping people who have low Calcium might be able to advise me on what to do. I have bought her some Calcium tablets.....I think they are called Osteocare in the hope that this will boost her Calcium level. But I haven't come across this before so I'm not sure what to do.

Is this anything to worry about? She is going back to her GP this week, either tomorrow or fri depending on when she can get a appointment. Is there any specific blood tests we should ask for?

It may be something to worry about. The causes of low Calcium are several so you best talk to your doc about looking into it. Meanwhile giving her Calcium supplements is good. However, Calcium wont work without vitamin D so along with the Calcium give her supplemental vitamin D...

Re: Low Calcium.....anyone have this?

Hiya and thank you for your reply. Yup she is currently taking calcium tablets which also contain Vitamin D. What causes low calcium? We've never had this in our family before so we're a bit concerned. I called her GP earlier but there isn't any appointments until next week. I'll try again tomorrow tho, hopefully there is a cancellation.

There are a bunch of possible causes - in general poor intake or absorption, increased loss, parathyroid problems, etc., etc.. Your docs are the ones to answer that question. Be patient, its unlikely anything is going to happen suddenly.

Yeah I know I should be patient but I can't help it as she's all I've got. Thank you again for your help.

In addition to vitamin D you also need to take a magnesium supplement.

It is also best taken in divided doses for better absorption--- 3 times daily.

I have found Chelated minerals best for absorption.

I wish your Mom well---Harry
