Question Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

I recently had this problem where when I actually SWALLOW, the food gets stuck in my mouth (top part of my throat right in the back of my mouth) and goes partially down but the rest is still in my mouth which makes me almost choke or when I try to swallow it just sticks in the back of my mouth and I gag very slightly. What I do then is force my tongue to maneuver the piece of food back onto my tongue away from the back of my mouth and attempt to swallow it again and usually it goes down the 2nd or 3rd try. What can be causing this problem?

Re: Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

Had a cold or flu recently? It is rare but a virus can sometimes affect the nerves that control the swallowing mechanism. A friend of mine discovered he couldn't swallow his food properly without standing up to help it down. Turned out he needed a special operation to fix this problem that he got after a bad bout of the flu.

Re: Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

My nephew has had this problem for a long time. I always thought it was because he was eating too fast and not chewing his food enough. They have not been able to find out the cause but I don't think they ever tried going to a specialist or anything.

Good Luck, I know it can be scary when it is happening.

Do you by chance have any anxiety problems? I know someone that when he gets nervous or has any anxiety he can't swallow food properly. It gets stuck in his throat.

Re: Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

hi kyle,
I have gerds and lpr, and i sometimes have problems swallowing that seem alot like what you described. I am not sure if it from anxiety, or if it is from my lpr. Dr seems to think that acid has damaged some of my muscles in my throat, which causes me to have this problem at times.

Re: Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

I am seeing an ENT but I didn't notice this problem until shortly after my first visit with him last month. I am not scheduled to see him until after I get me allergy tests next week.

I still have my other problem in my throat which is my main thing I am trying to find out what it is. Been over a month and still no one on these entire forums can figure it out from my numerous threads about it. For those of you who don't know, theres some type of problem in that back of my throat where my gag reflex is. It is hard to describe but it is basically feeling the urge to gag. Someone mentioned tonsils and what ever is wrong does feel like its in that area when it starts acting up but my ENT said my tonsils weren't abnormally large. This problem occurs mainly when I am exercising and running. Sometimes even when I am talking and just today it was bothering me while I was playing the flute (which i don't think ever happened)
From what I assume, it has to be the way the air is going in when i breathe or w/e I dunno.

Anyways I just thought I might mention that if both may be connected.

Re: Trouble swallowing...food gets stuck on soft palate

Kyle, about your gag reflex problem, I have the same problem (though only when I'm eating). My gag reflex started overreacting a couple years ago where even if I had food in my mouth, I'd gag, and I'd have to sit there still for a minute before I could swallow. I noticed it was connected to my seizures (I have epilepsy), and before they were controlled, the seizures spread to other parts of my body including my throat. When my seizures were more under control with meds, my gag reflex went back to normal, and only acts up when my seizures are acting up.
Maybe try to get an EEG done, to see if there's any abnormal brain activity...
