Friend has been water fasting for 26 days....worried

Hi....

Didn't know where to post this message, so hope I have found the right board.

A friend of mine was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation about 6 weeks ago. She spent almost 10 days in the hospital and was sent home on blood thinners. The docs wanted to shock her heart into a regular rythymn, but she refused.

Ultimately, she stopped all medicines and checked herself into a facility where she's been on a water fast. She's on the 26th day and may need more than a month's worth of fasting before she starts juices.

This facility does daily blood work and she's been reassured that things are getting much better. She drinks only ionized water, lays in bed and rests 24/7...only getting up to use the toilet. She admits she's as weak as a kitten.

No tv....limited to 3 phone calls a day (but she and her roomate sneak calls), no exercise, no walks outside for fresh air. Water and rest....that's it.

I realize that there are alternatives out there for most medical problems and admire my friend for doing what she feels she has to do, but I'm worried about her. Not only for her physical health, but her mental health. No social contact, isolation....seems cruel and strange.

The guy who runs this place is a chiropracter.....no medical degree.

Okay....any input? Would love to understand this.....

Thanks,
Linda

I would be worried, also. There are some great alternative therapies out there, and it doesn't sound like this is one of them.

I don't know why your friend had arrythmia, but this prolonged fast could possibly cause heart problems due to electrolyte imbalance. Is someone monitoring her heart?

Re: Friend has been water fasting for 26 days....worried

No one is monitoring her heart. Apparently, the fast is supposed to rid her body of toxins, which caused the atrial fibrillation in the first place (according to the head of this facility).

They draw blood every day...checking goodness knows what. According to her, she's been told that things "are getting better".....

Sounds wacky to me and I'm scared for her. My daughter works for cardiologists and said she should hightail it to a hospital before her heart really fails.

Thanks,
Linda

That does indeed sound like a strange facility. The lack of nutrition could cause an imbalance and lead to very serious heart problems. My brother has had some problems with atrial fib and he started taking magnesium after clearing it with his cardio and it seems to be helping. She needs to get out of that place before they kill her.

I agree. Based on what I know about the heart, she could really, seriously die, and if she were to collapse, they might not have enough time to get her to competent help, even assuming they tried immediately. Is someone she knows living near this facility? I doubt she could run away, someone would have to go and get her.

Re: Friend has been water fasting for 26 days....worried

Thanks so much for your responses.

My friend is with another friend at this facility. Her family doesn't agree with what she's doing, so I'm afraid they're not much help. I could certainly drive and "rescue" her....but she's convinced she's doing the right thing.

This gal doesn't believe in conventional medicine at all. I was even surprised to hear that she headed to a hospital for the irregular heartbeat. She doesn't believe in taking medicines, and simply decided to turn her back on the medical docs and do this fast. She's not a kid....she's 62!

Her muscles are most probably shot. She told me yesterday that her potassium was low, but they "fixed" that. I don't know what she meant by that....but I'm assuming they cover their butts and give their "patients"
(only 9 beds in this place) what they need when they have to....besides water.

I'm calling her tomorrow to see how things are going and to see if she'll offer any more information than she has. I'm sure she's paying a small fortune for this as well.

Linda

Ok, lack of potassium is the #1 thing I was worried about. If they're getting that as necessary, it's much less likely they will die suddenly. It's still a bad idea.
