Some time ago I developed a problem with one of my knees, not sure how.
When lowering myself straight down, bending my knees, one knee makes awful crackling noises, but does not hurt. This also happens with that knee when I crawl on my knees. Again, there is no pain, but I fear that this may eventually turn into something.
Any ideas on what this is and the best way to deal with it? I'd appreciate some advice. Thanks!
You know, I had that crackling noise when I'd move my knee in a certain position, esp. three or four summers ago while jogging. It was not painful in the beginning. But I kept jogging on the knee, and later started developing a little pain in my knee that would last a couple of days after jogging. I did get it x-rayed by an orthopedist, and turns out that I was in the beginning stages of arthritis. I haven't had any problems with it recently. The doctor just said to make sure to have properly fitted shoes, and do these certain exercises...and that was all I could do. Really paying attention to the shoes I wear and the fitting has seemed to help me a lot.
(I also had chrondomalicia patella - also called runner's knee - about 16 years ago...which can lead to arthritis.)
Proud mommy of four:

my knees make that awful crackling sound when i bend. mine is from arthritis. i've had arthritis in my right knee since i was 12 due to an injury and now its in my left knee due to over use of that knee because of my right knee being sensitive. i dont know how old you are but arthritis knows no age...if it is bothersome in any way you might want to get it checked out..good luck...:-)
I have had that cracking, a loud noise in my knees for years. I also have a problem with my calves cramping at night. The thing I have found that helps is taking Calcium, 600 mg per day in adddition to my multi-vitamin. It has stopped the popping. Of course, you have to take them daily. If you stop, the /cracking popping will come back.
I have this problem also. I notice the most while weightlifting and going up stairs. I have tendonitis in my knee on and off. It just means it hurts to keep my knee straight. I don't think the two are related becuase the popping doesn't cause pain, but just a suggestion.
