Mental Health Problem...Need advice

A lot of things haven't been going to well with my life for the past 6 months. Deaths, girl problems, and family relations have just been pushing down on me. I haven't been truly happy in 4 months or so. I lost a good deal of weight, (intentionally) which was something I wanted to do, and was never happy at the good job I did.

For the past 4 months, I've been pretty much 'empty,' if you will. I've turned to drugs and alcohol, with the occasional conference with a good friend of mine. Now I want to get help.

I'm not sure if I have an anxiety related problem or depression. Sometimes I feel extremely tense and mad at such a simple situation. Other times I seclude myself from my family and just feel plain old sad. Hopefully you guys can help me out.
Thanks

Matt

Re: Mental Health Problem...Need advice

We all go through "bad" times. The first step in helping yourself is to stop the drugs and alcohol. They can make anxiety and depression worse. In addition, start eating a healthy diet....fruits, veggies, lean protien and take a daily vitamin suitable for your age and gender. Try these things first before running off to get medications. If you're still really feeling lousy after you've "cleaned" yourself up, then you should seek medical advice. I wish you well

I have a great diet, thats how I lost all the weight and am keeping it off!
And when I say great diet, I mean down to the exact macromolecule. I'm trying to gain muscle right now, so I'm eating extremely clean.

Does this mean I should try to seek some help?

I second getting off of the drugs and alcohol. They are only a momentary fix and will likely cause you to become increasingly dependent on them.

Congratulations on making your dietary changes! Perhaps now you should seek out a good therapist to talk to.

Often times when things outside of our control just start going in a negative direction, we feel less control over ourselves and that will often lead to anxiety. Dwelling on how bad things are and how bad they can yet become will often lead to depression. A therapist can give you coping skills to deal with the bumpy roads in life and give you proactive solutions to gain control of your life and turn things more in a positive direction.

Be well and keep us posted!

Re: Mental Health Problem...Need advice

Hi Matt, I am literally exactly the same, and as much as ppl wanna tell you that it's the drugs and alcohol, I don't believe it's the cause of all of your problems. A lot of times people look to drugs and alcohol when they are depressed because the state of euphoria that it brings is the closest way one can feel happiness when the rest of life is stressful. If you are able to correct the mental issue, I believe the need to seek out drugs and alcohol will become more of a social habit until you grow out of it and get serious.

Are you currently doing anything with your life, or are you still living at home with your parents? Trying to work things out, dealing with the same old stress day in and day out, with no real goals in the future is very tough and often leads to too much comfortability and disables the body's mean of growth. I find that positive thinking and planning ahead is the first step into ascending from rock bottom.

If you are getting constant mood swings, as long as it's not withdrawal, I highly suggest you seek medical assistance. If you are constantly feeling depressed and it's all you can think about and it's dominating and really ruining your life... causing breakups in your relationship because you have trouble understanding the situations brought upon with your girl... feeling like you try so hard to make her happy, but she never seems happy and you feel guilty, like it's all your fault... these are all common situations and symptoms leading to some type of depression. You should be concerned and pay attention to your mental health as much as possible to help diagnose and run with it.
