Bit the heck out of my tongue but should it look like this???

Hey everyone! Ok here's what I did. I was at a Rest. eating and all of a sudden, I bit my tongue to where it made my eye water. I thought I had bitten the side of it but its underneath where apparently it was bitten. So anyway, when I looked at it, I really freaked out!! There is a huge purple area under my tongue and where I bit it, it is red with a white center that looks like a hole. As far as I can remember, it didn't bleed or if it did it was very little because I immediatley swished some ice water in my mouth and then sucked on ice. It did cause a bump from where I bit it but my question is, is it suppose to look all purple and red????? Do I need to see a Dr. for this? I have never had this happen before and it is just worrying me!! Can anyone offer up a suggestion?

There are two large veins under the tongue, so I think yeah, it could give you one of those scary looking blue/black bruises.

The tongue heals quickly, if it doesn't start improving in a few days, see your GP or go to a medi-clinic.

i agree with the above poster. one thing you can do to help it heal more quickly is warm salt water rinses or swishes a few times a day? for some reason, salt really helps heal mucosal tissue faster. if you are having any pain, you can use either oragel on that area or even something like listerine,it has to have alcohol in it so it will "numb' the area a bit and also keep bacteria at bay too. anything like a sore or cut in our mouths will heal much more quickly than regular tissue for some reason,so it should not take too long. if you would feel more comfortable, you can always see your dentist or doc about this, but i do think it will most likely heal all by itself more quickly than you think it will. if things get worse or don't change within like the next week or so,then i would for certain see someone about it,but i do think it will heal just fine soon.

honestly luv? i have been sitting here actually trying to figure out with my tongue, how in the heck you could have actually bit your tongue like that and i cannot for the life of me get my teeth to go there, you know what i mean? that must have been a real flukey type of bite you had goin there. just do those salt swishes,it does promote healing. keep us posted, FB

FB,

I think how it happened was, I was eating rather fast and I have 1 tooth in the back of my mouth to chew on and I was eating hot bread so maybe the motion in eating of swishing so to speak of the food, made my tongue push harder and it rolled a bit to where I bit it. That's the only thing I can think of because with the one tooth back on that side (I could have eaten on the other side but didn't) I probably tend to push the food back more so that I can chew it with that tooth and not the gum. Does that make any sense??
