Could Cold Weather Be Doing This To My Limbs?

Hey, everyone. A little background first. 52 year old female with sciatica and osteoarthritis of the neck and shoulders.

This winter has been the worst. Every time I go out in 20 Fahrenheit or less degree weather, I find I lose muscle control in my legs and arms, down to feet and hands. Once I get back inside, it is hard to get my extremities to warm up and be more mobile, and it takes a while for some of the numbness to go away.

I will also ache really bad in the muscles, mostly my biceps and down the backs of my legs.

Could I just be getting sensitive to cold weather? Someone told me that it is also just part of aging as our circulation starts to deteriorate.

Any ideas you have would be helpful.

You might try doing a search on Raynaud's syndrome as a secondary condition to your osteoarthritis. It mainly affects hands and feet, but with the osteo it might be different. They way you describe it as being worse in cold weather is what sent up the red flag. Do a search and then speak with your doctor. Good luck!

Re: Could Cold Weather Be Doing This To My Limbs?

Hi, Soibhan . . . I did look up Raynaud in my home medical encyclopedia and my fingers and toes do not change in color either when cold or when warming up.

My husband mentioned tonight that he was having problems with his extremities after being in the cold all day today as well. He had frost bite of the toes and fingers when he was little. I had forgotten about that. I did, too, but not severe.

I will mention Raynaud and frost bite to my doctor though I will not be seeing her until March.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Could Cold Weather Be Doing This To My Limbs?

Hi, all . . . I do not know if this will clarify anything or not, but my husband observed today while we were discussing this that when I get really cold while being outside, I will ball up my fists, duck my head a bit and just tense up all over.

I do not like to wear hats or gloves though I do wear scarves to cover my ears and throat because I do not like feeling restricted or limited (I know - sounds weird). I wonder if the muscle aches are from my tensing up? I do not notice them on days I stay inside or at all during warmer weather.
