Right hand keeps locking up, help?

I've had problems with my hand and arm for a long time and it's getting worse and worse. It started a couple of years ago. I went to see my doctor who said it sounded like a trapped nerve in my neck. He said there was nothing he could do about it and that it would gradually ease off. But it hasn't.

Now, whenever I cup my hand around something and hold it there for more than say 15 minutes, my hand locks up in that position when I try to stretch it out. And if I stretch it out too fast (which is difficult but manageable, just!) I get these horrific electric-shock pains shoot through my arm and hand. It's hard to pin-point the actual starting point of this pain but it usually ends in either my index finger, my thumb or the fleshy part beneath my thumb. Aside from this, I get funny feelings in my hand. It goes tingly and sometimes feels like it's burning. Today I also had a new sensation when I stretched my hand out after using a vacuum cleaner for just five minutes. It felt like the skin was crawling on my hand, like there was ants running all over it or something. My right hand also goes very cold sometimes and this seems to worsen the symptoms.

I'd like to know if anyone has heard of this before and what it might be. Thanks.

More info:

I have just finished eating my dinner (which was sardines and toast) and my fingers have gone stiff and my hand aches just because I used a fork for ten minutes.

You'll need to see a "Hand and Upper Extremity" Surgeon, though they may have a slightly different title in the UK.

I assume you've already seen a neurologist - if your family doc hasn't referred you to a neuro yet, I'd seriously consider getting a new family doc because your symptoms definitely warrant a neurological exam.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen a neurologist since you have to get appointments from the doctor that I'm registered with. I will see him again, though. In fact, I'll print the symptoms off and give them to him, see what he thinks.

Re: Right hand keeps locking up, help?

I saw about 17 doctors for this, they all blew me off. The best surgeons blew me off the fastest.

Massage therapy and yoga restored my life. What was happening was that the muscles in my neck and shoulder were spasming, putting pressure on the nerves to my hands. Once I learned to ease the spasms, life got better.

Definitely have an x-ray done, and maybe a nerve conduction test or MRI. But if those fail to find a major injury, get yourself to a physical therapist, massage therapist, yoga teacher who deals with injuries, anybody like that, and learn to calm your muscles.

Have any of these doctors mentioned Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to you? Do a search and see if any of your symptoms match up. It's a strange syndrome, common in people who do repetitive movements in their jobs or people who use a computer a lot or musicians, etc. There's plenty of info online so look it up and see what you think. Good luck!

Re: Right hand keeps locking up, help?

Thanks, janewhite1. Glad to know you finally got the help you needed after all those rubbish doctors! It's awful how incompetent some doctors are. I've got a Yoga DVD, so I'll try it. I do tense my neck muscles up a lot due to my posture. I'm flat-footed and it effects my whole bodies posture a lot so I guess it could be all down to that.

Soibhan: I've heard about carpal tunnel syndrome but no doctor has ever suspected it. The only thing my doctor thought it COULD be was a trapped nerve and that's it. He didn't even give me any advice on how to ease the symptoms of said trapped nerve, so I'm guessing he probably just said that to shut me up. I don't have much luck with doctors. They always brush me off.

Thanks for the help and advice, guys. I'm starting to think this online forum is a lot more helpful than any doctor!

Re: Right hand keeps locking up, help?

Feel the muscles in your forearm. Tense them, then release them. Are they still hard even after you stop tensing? Might be muscle spasm in the forearm muscles. You can massage it with your other hand, or by rolling something like a pen over the muscles. Stretching the hand regularly several times a day (especially before you use it) can also help.

Thanks for your advice. No, my muscles are soft when I'm not tensing them. The massage still sounds good though I will try the hand stretching, too. Hopefully it will help and I can sort this out without the use of a doctor! Thanks again

Re: Right hand keeps locking up, help?

Try gently stretching your neck a few times a day. Tilt your head to one side, hold it there for a count of ten, then tilt it to the other side. Don't stretch so hard it hurts.
