A problem I am having... need help/advice

I have had this certain problem for about two years now and it is getting really frustrating. I have searched the internet over and over again, but I have found nothing. While searching, I found this website so I decided to sign up and see if I can get advice about my problem.

The problem I am having is whenever I am doing any sort of physical activity I can’t control my legs. It’s like they have a mind of their own. The most recent example was last night. I was playing basketball with 10 friends and the first time I jumped up to take a shot, I landed on my legs and they just started doing their own thing. They started moving around and I couldn’t hold myself up so I fell to the ground with my legs going “crazy”. This feeling was in an “extreme form” for about 10secs, but once I could support myself my legs still felt funny and it was hard to walk normal for a good 2mins as I still had a very slight sense of not being able to control my legs.

I also get this issue when I run long distances. I ran 3 miles last month and towards the end I felt like I was going to trip because I couldn’t control my legs, they just had a mind of their own. There have been numerous other times where I had this issue of all of a sudden not being able to control my legs. Such as jumping to catch a football.

I am slightly overweight, but I have been going to the gym 3 times a week for the past 2 months which is part of my new year’s resolution to get in shape. Every time I go to the gym I run a mile and a half on the treadmill then I go work out on the weight machines. But when I am running on the treadmill, I don’t get this issue for whatever reason. But in the real world, I ALWAYS get this issue. I try to tell people what I am experiencing, but they just laugh it off and don’t seem to care. It is getting really frustrating as I have been through MANY embarrassing moments of not being able to support myself in simple physical situations. 2+ years ago, I never had a problem like this. But over the past two years, it has gotten worse and worse and worse. In the past, it would only happen sometimes, but now it happens all the time.

So my question to you guys is does this sound familiar? Is this some sort of disorder I could have? Should I seek a doctor? I simply don’t know what to do.

Sorry if any of this is hard to read, or has many grammatical errors. Its late at night and I am very tired.

i really need to know what exactly you mean by "i cannot "control" my legs"? do they 'just' feel weak and unable to support you or do they actually get like spasmy and move on their own? if you could just describe EXACTLY what it is you are feeling when this occurs it would help tons in helping you with the best possible advice. there is just a big difference(and possible reasons for) in feeling very weak in the legs and having them tighten up and feel somewhat spasmsed/uncontrolled by you,you know what i mean? I think its leg spasms and they move on their own and thus making me lose my balance. I guess that would be the more accurate way of describing them, I really wasn't sure how to describe it.

Re: A problem I am having... need help/advice

believe me,i am the queen of strange and insane body stuff ever since my spinal cord was injured. i can relate to what you are describing. the one thing that would really be helpful in pinpointing the root of your problem would be an MRI, done on your whole spinal area. just to see if there is something inside there that is causing this, it would be the 'most likely' place to start. have you ever seen at least your primary about this stuff? having just a consult/eval with him or her and getting that referral for the MRI would at least be a good starting point. its just not normal to have your legs do that,as i know you already know.

if you do indeed have some level of "hightened" reflexes of responses in your legs,it could be coming from just about any level of your spine. it all depends upon just what it actually is that is affecting things and where it is located. but you DO need to get this better evaled at this point. your doc would do a basic neuro eval which would include tapping your knees withthe little hammer? this one test would show if your reflexes are too hyper. mine are and believe me,my legs do their little "happy dance" at various times thru out my day.

i would simply make an appt with your primary for that eval and see about getting that MRI. 'something" is causing this to occur in you and just needs to be found out. an MRI,with a contrasting agent will hopefully show that for you. it could be many possible things that could be affecting certain areas,so i am not EVEN goin there right now. just push for the MRI. good luck and please keep me posted as to what you find out. Re: A problem I am having... need help/advice

Thanks for your help! I will go and try to get an MRI done as soon as I can or at least talk to my doctor about it. I have never consulted a professional about this issue. I have just mainly only mentioned it to my parents.

Re: A problem I am having... need help/advice

well then, its about time you did check into this. i am glad you are going to be seeing your doc about this. it really does sound from what you described that you just DO have hypereflexia to a certain degree in your legs(something just causing them to be more hypersensitive). it does need to be looked into further for the specific reason. please let me know just what you find out. Re: A problem I am having... need help/advice

Yup, I will let you know.

The problem is I probably won’t be able to get it checked out for another 2 weeks due to me not having health insurance at the moment. I was on my mom's health insurance plan that she had with the company she worked for. But she got laid off in December and now we don't have health insurance. It sounds like I should have health insurance again in about 2 weeks.
