sore adams apple

I also posted this on the ENT board. My son, he is 17, told me he has a sore adams apple. I checked it out and where he said it is sore has a long skinny bump on it. Is this something that should be checked out, or just a wait and see. He kind of just brushed it off, as maybe he is growing or he slept wrong, but he doesn't say something hurts unless it really hurts. I would appreciate any feedback you have.
Thanks in advance,
Kathy
