Is it possible to have normal white blood count with infection?

Hello,

I had a tooth infection. No pain or anything and no fever. My white blood count was normal but xrays showed infection.

Why didn't my white blood count go up and why didn't I get a fever? Is my body not recognizing bacteria infections in my system? Should I be worried?
