So I woke up Thursday coughing, I went to work got sent home sick. I went to the drs on Friday. Dr told me I had bronchitis. I got cough syrup to help with the coughing. Now it feels like I have a cold. After 3 days I still get hot and cold, I also get out of breath easliy if I do to much. Is this normal when someone has bronchitis. I only ask b/c this is my first time with bronchitis. I am 24 yrs old and before I had this I was health. Thank you for your time.
zeeb,
A cold w.bronchitis can absolutely wipe you out, make you miserable and yes, make you feel short of breath.
Normal.
Drink lots of tea and fluids- it'll help loosen the congestion.
Don't overdue anything for a few days.
Nice and easy and you'll feel better soon.
Just so you don't panic, the cough is often the first thing to come and the last to go!!
Yes, bronchitis can get worse if not properly treated. Did the doctor give you an antibiotic?
Pneumonia can result from bronchitis.
Taking Mucinex will help keep the mucous thinned.
Thank you for your reply.
The dr gave me Guaifen/Codein Syrup. He told me that this would help my cough and so far it hasnt help. I have been taking this like I am suppose to, every 6 hrs 1-2 tsp. I have been taking 2 every 6 hrs. Also I am coughing but nothing is coming up, but I can taste it in my mouth.
Guaifenesin with codeine is commonly prescribed for cough.
Guaifenesin is an expectorant which helps to loosen up mucous and will help your congestion.
Codeine is used to quiet a cough, mostly so you can get some sleep if cough is keeping you up at night.
Do not take this stuff except every 6 hours!!
You are over-medicating yourself by taking it more frequently. Only take codeine or codeine mixtures/solutions/syrups as prescribed.
Your doctor thinks your bronchitis is viral and not bacterial, that's why no antibiotic. Antibiotics do not work for viral infections.
However, if you don't start feeling better in a day or 2 report back to your doctor. Sometimes what starts out to be viral can become a secondary bacterial infection in which case an antibiotic would then be in order.
Drink lots of fluids- my pharmacist thinks it works better than guaifenesin!
zuzu xx
P.S. Misty's suggestion to take Mucinex tablets is good, except Mucinex IS guaifenesin, and you are already getting that in the cough syrup.
Thank you for your reply. I do feel a little better. I am starting to get my energy back and wanting to eat food. The only thing I cant stand is the cough.
Glad you're beginning to turn the corner. As I said before, the cough is usually the first and LAST to go.
Appetite coming back- good sign!
Hang in there, you'll be fine.
When I last had bronchitis, I'd say it mainly lasted 5-7 days, but certain symptoms, like an annoying cough, lasted longer. It goes away pretty gradually. I didn't get any prescriptions the last time I had it, but I took over the counter medicines for chest congestion since I had a lot of phlegm. I took a liquid medication that was cooling and kept well hydrated by drinking a lot of fluids. The medicine really helped a lot of my symptoms. I would suggest resting and relaxing as much as you can. I had to work when I had it and warned everyone to stay away from me (I caught it from another coworker and really could not miss work those days). I definitely would have stayed home if it were a normal day of work. Hope you feel better soon! Bronchitis or anything similar is NO fun. And yes, crazy changing body temperatures sounds very normal to me.
