Hey there guys,
Trapped my finger in a door pretty badly earlier. The nail on my finger is half black, and the other half red with blood. There is no open cut. However, I have lost feeling in the finger tip. When the injury happened, I put my finger in ice-water for a good amount of time to best reduce swelling.
I'm not really too bothered about the loss of feeling (I have a finger on the opposite hand with no feeling, too), but I'm just wondering if there's any complications that I should perhaps see a doctor about. Nothing's broke, I can move the end of my finger just fine, just a dull ache and, for the most part, a loss of feeling.
Any advice? It's not going to just "fall off" overnight is it?
When you say you have lost feeling, have you lost all feeling or is it decreased sensitivity? For example, if you press on it with a finger, do you feel the pressure? If you take a needle/pin and gently poke it(not enough to cause bleeding), is it painful? The swelling and throbbing could be masking sensation but you should still have some feeling left.
Here's a tip to make sure you have good circulation (do this on another finger first so you see what I'm talking about). If you press the nail or pad of your finger till it turns white, and then let go, does the color return within 3 seconds? That's a test of circulation. So if you find a spot on your injured finger that you can do this on, press on it till it turns white, and then see how long it takes to return to color. If it does within 3 seconds, then circulation is not impaired.
It's a weird thing to describe. About 5 years ago on another finger, I cut right through to the bone, nearly lost the end of my finger. As it was healing, the cut area was numb, BUT oddly it was hypersensative at the same time (Like a DEEP pain... Other nerves?)
That injury healed years ago, but it's the same feeling I am getting now on this new injury. Like if I place the numb bit of my crushed finger on a surface lightly, I would barely be able to tell it's touching that surface (No perception of texture). Pain is like a deep in the finger pain, rather than on the surface.
I can't press on the nail, at all (Too painful, but like I said, it's a really deep pain, rather than anything on the surface). In addition, the bottom half of the nail is completely black, and the top half is red with blood spots under the nail. The finger is very hot and swollen... Feels sort of like a blister.
It's hard to describe. The tip hasn't lost any colour.. It's still a fleshy pink, amid blood spots on the skin and a further developping bruise.
Like I said, I don't mind losing the feeling in the finger. Over years, that will return as it has done in my other finger. And there's no open wound for infection to occur... Is there any cause for concern?
Doesn't sound like a cause for concern especially since the tip is warm/hot, which indicates circulation is present, and that's the most important thing. It will take a while for the internal swelling to decrease and pain to subside, and expect the nail to be black for minimum of a month. Best to you and your healing!
