Strange skin bleeding

My wife, Judy, over the years (67) has been very healthy and other than having to go to a doctor or hospital for our three grown children and a herniated disc she has never been to any doctor or hospital. Lately I've noticed that she bleeds quite easily with a little scratch. The other day while at a Christmas party at our daughters house their dog jumped up to greet her and on it's nail caught the skin on her hand and it just peeled off about like that of a ripe peach. It has not yet stopped bleeding. I've asked her to go in and get it checked out and she just puts on another band aid and says to just never mind - ignore it and it will go away. This seems like something with some underlying conditions. Sincerely Jack in Gig Harbor

Re: Strange skin bleeding

Normal aging can cause mild skin fragility but so can liver problems, diabetes, poor diet or malabsorption (lack of vitamin K), arteriosclerosis, as a side effect of medications (for ex: prednisone or long term antibiotics) or supplements (ex: fish oil), there are many possible reasons . . .

Here's a Medline Plus article on the different health issues that can result in "tissue paper" skin and easy bruising or bleeding. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/004014.htm

Re: Strange skin bleeding

She simply has paper thin skin and that's pretty much it. ...normally that thin skin happens to older than her people but her genetics are apparently different.
