Muscle tightness throughout entire body

Hello, my name is Brian and I am a sophomore at the University of Arizona and I have been suffering from body tightness since elementary school. However, recently it has become a lot worse. I have not been able to find anyone else that has the same symptoms as me since everyone else seems to have muscle pain and I do not. Basically my situation is: when ever I stand up my legs tighten up really bad and I can't move for a few seconds, when ever I clench my hands it takes a few seconds for me to unclench them, when ever I bite on something hard my jaw tightens up and after a few seconds I can chew normally, when im backing my car out and I turn my head to see if anyone is behind me my neck will tighten and it will take a few moments for me to look in front of me again, the tightness also happens in sports when I try and sprint where my legs will tighten up and I will fall, however once the tightness goes away after a few seconds I can run freely without any difficulty. In addition to the muscle tightness I also feel a bit of exhaustion and laziness. Doctors have told me that it might be because I don't have enough electrolytes or it might be thyroid disease, however recently I have been drinking about 3 gatoraide's a day and I dont seem to have the other symptoms for thyroid disease. If you have any commentary please let me know.

Thanks,
Brian

Have you had any basic bloodwork done?

Re: Muscle tightness throughout entire body

Well, I recently had shoulder surgery and they did some blood tests but they never said that anything was wrong. Would you recommend getting some more blood work done?

you may have hypokalemia or a postassium wasting disorder. your potassium is low isnt it? gatorade has some but not enough and if you drink it that much you may become diabetic. go get some pedialyte. it has 1700 g of potassium. it says 20meq but that is what is in mg. i have this but i have a kidney problem that causes it and i began to have some issues like you in my teens but went undx until crashed literally and that mean i went down . muscles all over just not functioning can kill you.
low potassium can cause serious muscle issues.

you may need an rx of potassium. not just otc or gatorade stuff. it will not help it.

Yes you need to get more bloodwork done. You can go to your primary doctor and get a complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), urinalysis, and a tsh (thyroid) done. This will give a general overview of your whole body's condition and will help point to the right direction of where to go next. You may also want to get an electrolyte panel done. Docs order these tests all the time so it should be no big deal to get an appointment with your primary care doc and request this bloodwork.

Or if your funds are tight, you can also request a copy of your bloodwork from the hospital where you had your surgery and then you can probably do one or two less of those blood tests.

yes and most dr do not order the potassium test unless they think you are vomiting. the night i went in i could barely breath and move. they had seen me ther many times with my daughter who has medical issues and my mom with cancer. they checked my potassium and it was low. the discomort i was was there for so long. my kidney do not keep potassium well. i thought it was old age, menopause or something. eyes twtiched liops were twitching. all gone now.

Re: Muscle tightness throughout entire body

Brian,

I too have muscle tightness all over my body. I was just wondering if you had any success in getting rid of this problem. If so, I would be interested in knowing what you did. Hope all is well. Thanks.

Michael
