Sore chest and lungs from breathing in cold winter air

Today I was walking on college campus in 20 degree weather up a slight incline with a heavy packpack on and carrying my computor in the other. I became winded by the cold air. I felt like my lungs were closing up, my heart was pounding so hard and my lungs were burning like crazy! I am a for the most part healthy pretty inshape 46 yr olds and never smoked a day in my life.

I thought I was going to faint before I made it into the building. Am I out of shape? I don't have high blood pressure eithor. Tonight my chest and lungs feel so sore. They just ache. It hurts to breathe. It feels so tender. Is is possible that breathing in the cold air and being out of breath and trying to take in more air in the cold that it kind of stretched it or bruised my lungs? Its freaking me out.

Has anyone else had this happen?? I don't mean to be a big baby about it. It just made me think I was so out of shape carrying all that stuff in the cold air and panting away.

Re: Sore chest and lungs from breathing in cold winter air

Well, almost everyone who has asthma has a hard time with exertion in cold weather. And it is possible to develop asthma at any age.

For tonight, don't move around too much. If you still aren't feeling right tomorrow, or if it happens again, make an appointment with a doctor.

Re: Sore chest and lungs from breathing in cold winter air

WOW I never thought it could be asthma. It felt like it would feel like. I just couldn't get a deep breath in. It was burning. When I came in from the cold I stayed in one building and let the warm air warm up my lungs. It took about 30 mins to calm down and relax and return to a normal pulse. But my chest feels sore and tender. I am breathing normal. It's just so tender. This is the very first time I have ever experienced this in my life. It's quite scary.
