Exclamation Major Lower Back Pain - Can't really walk or sit up

My mother is having some major major back pain to the point where she can't walk or stand up straight. The pain is on her left side, but radiates all over and is at her mid to lower back. No pain medication can help. Most pain is when she tries to stand up or tries to sit down. She feels lots of pressure. When she finally stands up shes fine for a moment, but she can't place any weight on her left leg. She's only 40.

She has been to the ER and her blood and urine work came out fine, but she's still having horrible back pain.

Has she tried the hot/cold therapy on her back?

Re: Major Lower Back Pain - Can't really walk or sit up

Have they done x-ray or MRI to check her spine? Back pain with leg weakness suggests a disc pressing on a nerve, and that would be the best way to check.

I would also suggest an orthopedic surgeon who does a lot of work with spines.

Thank you so much! My mother did not have an x-ray when she went to the hospital. We are thinking about back to the ER later tonight.

That's odd that they didn't do a spinal xray. Did they say why they didn't?

Apparently, the doctors told my mother that they where gonna do an x-ray, and they just sent her straight home. They never said why, but my mother says that when ever she places pressure where it hurts she feels relief.

I'd take her back and make them do X-Rays.

Re: Major Lower Back Pain - Can't really walk or sit up

I'd also make an appointment with a spinal surgeon.

If exams of her spine are normal, it's possible it could be a severe muscle spasm. In fact, even back pain caused by serious spinal injury is usually complicated by muscle spasm. Thus, a muscle relaxant might provide her some relief.

Re: Major Lower Back Pain - Can't really walk or sit up

When I had a buldging disc with muscle pain, an Epson Salt (2 cups) bath did me wonders.
I feel sorry for your mom. It's a horrible pain.

We took my mom back to the ER yesterday and she finally had an MRI. She has a herniated disk. She's still in a lot of pain thought, but at least we know what is going on.
