What would cause someone to vomit and break out in hives?

Didn't know where to post this.. well this happen to my sister a few days ago. She didn't eat or drink anything to cause an allergic reaction all she drank was water when it happened and she vomited at least two times the strange part is she had hives afterward. What would cause this besides an allergy? She did wake up with an ear ache. Could the flu cause hives? or food poisoning? Anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Why would you think food poisoning if she had nothing to eat?

She ate the day before and I'm pretty sure you can still get food poisoning a day or two later...

Re: What would cause someone to vomit and break out in hives?

I've had food poisoning and it hit me right away, so I don't think that is what is causing this. Are you really sure she ate nothing, because the only thing I have ever heard of that would cause the symptoms you describe is a food allergy. How old is she? How bad are the hives? Is she running a fever?

I asked her yesterday if she ate anything the day it happened because i was guessing food allergy too because of the hives all over her face but she said all she had was bottled water. The hives are gone but she stills feels weak and her ear hurts a little still. She's in her late 20's.

Re: What would cause someone to vomit and break out in hives?

Glad to hear she's getting better. My guess is that the hives were a reaction to an infection. You mentioned ear ache, so probably something like a sinus infection, which will cause vomiting if there is a lot of mucus drainage.

Re: What would cause someone to vomit and break out in hives?

A lot of things can cause hives to appear, including stress. And food poisoning, depending on type, can occur up to 48 hours after ingesting the bad food. If it were an allergic food response, you'd expect to find hives in and around her mouth or in the throat and possibly the rectal area after it was passed. It can also cause the BP to fall and pulse to rise.

So chances are it was a stomach virus of some kind and the suddenness of it caused stress hives to occur from the forcefulness of the vomiting.

Hives does not always mean allergy.

Re: What would cause someone to vomit and break out in hives?

If all she had was water on an empty stomach and also had drainage from the ear infection/sinuses, that can certainly cause vomiting. I can't drink water first thing in the AM without getting nauseous.
