Red face Strained/Torn Muscle?

I am not sure how it happened, but I think it was when I was lifting a box of crystal and trying to be extremely careful! I have been having excruciating pain in my upper right chest right above my breast. It doesn't hurt to breathe unless I take a big breath. It also seems to be right under my skin and not behind the ribs. If I move the wrong way it almost feels like a ripping pain. This has been happening for the past 4 weeks. It felt like it started to heal but on the 4th my husband was putting a 2x4 up and it almost fell. I jerked away and now the pain is back 10x what it was before. I am a mother of three so I can't just lay down and rest until it heals! Does this sound like a strained/torn muscle? Im hoping it is just strained but if it doesn't heal soon I will be headed to the Doc. Any ideas for pain management for a mother of three that doesn't like meds?

Re: Strained/Torn Muscle?

Years ago, while lifting a sack of cement, my mom tore some muscle in her chest area. It seemed to take forever to heal. I think you'll just have to baby it until it heals.

Re: Strained/Torn Muscle?

Sounds like a Pectoralis Major muscle tear, the largest chest muscle and you probably tore the healing fibres with your 2x4 adventure. With this tear you get hardly any pain on deep breaths or even coughing. If it were the intercostal muscles deep to them you would get sharp pains.
Apply very cold compresses for say 10 minutes at a time several times a day. Perhaps you could try a binder to compress the muscle somewhat or criss cross the area with some athletic tape. Apply a square inch for several hours to make sure you are not allergic. It may be prudent not to take anti inflammatory medication because that it what initiates the healing process. Hope this helps.
James.

Re: Strained/Torn Muscle?

James, interest info. you provided. Thanks. I was wondering, with back pain it is recommended that alternating hot and cold packs be applied. Would this treatment be appropriate for this type of muscle damage?

Re: Strained/Torn Muscle?

Initially cold, after about 10 days hot or alternatiing hot and cold. You could do some isometric exercise, initially just squeezing hands together with arms outstretched, of course with you household duties you maybe are doing enough.
Hope you do well.
James
