Persistent Sore Throat

Hey. I've had a sore throat on and off for years. I'm a singer so this is a problem. I've learned the correct singing techniques so I know this isn't the cause although obviously singing exacerbates an already swollen throat. I've seen the doctor and I have nothing wrong with my tonsils or anything so I believe I'm just susceptible to throat irritation and infection.

I wondered if someone could recommend any medicines or perhaps certain vitamins or anything really. I already drink hot honey and lemon drinks daily, gargle salt water to decrease the swelling when I have to sing, antiseptic losenges and I've recently been trying a throat spray which kind of numbs the pain but doesn't seem to prevent the problems.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

Do you have any fever? Did you check your tonsils? You can have pharyngitis or tonsillitis or both of them.

Ooh no its nothing that serious. And no I don't have a fever either. Its like I said it keeps coming back like every 2-4 weeks but I don't have any other symptoms. Although it is quite painful, my only real concern is my singing voice. I have seen the doctor about this on a few occasions over the years but I've always been told 'its minor inflammation that will go down' or something similar. And although that is true it keeps coming back.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

I have a friend who is on an anti-inflammation diet due to a medical condition she has that causes inflammation. She said it has done wonders for her. You might try looking that up. Maybe this is why your inflammation flare ups are on and off.
Just a thought.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

Could also partly be from reflux. I lost my voice...well, it was very raspy and strained, for about 4 months because of reflux.

I thought it was an infection around the larynx, but the ENT took a look and deemed it reflux. I did Zantac 150mg twice a day and it cleared up nicely.

I'm not a singer, but it was nice to get a voice back to sing to songs, etc.

I have problems with throat irritation as well: my voice gets horse

It is primarily from allergies and post-nasal drip. It can also be cause by acid reflux.

Fortunately, these are pretty easy to correct: irrigate your sinuses with a neti pot or irrigation machine, go get immunotherapy if needed, and take a OTC acid-reflux medication to deal with that.

The problem will likely go away within a few weeks, although it can come back if you don't stay on top of it.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

Many on other health boards say that drinking a little Apple Cider Vinegar works wonders with acid reflux. I know, it doesn't make sense with vinegar being acidic, but that's what they say.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

Apple cider vinegar doesnt really work for me, neither drinking too much water. I also want my ENT to do a scope b4 I got for endoscopy. But my voice sounds good and I don't cough. I wonder if its still LRP that causes me problems. I also heard that the most efficient method is to boil some water, add natural oils and breath over it for 10 min. Also gargle with water helps me feel better.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

I would probably check into it a little better. I've had a sore throat on and off for years also and put it off from smoking. I just recently found out from other tests that I have an 1 1/2 in nodule on my thyroid gland and while i'm not happy about it it does explain the sore throat and that i'm not crazy. I have to go see a specialist for it. I had a catscan, ultra sound and then a PETscan done and all I was told by my pulmonologist was that the radiologist was very concerned about it, so I don't know if it showed signs of cancer from the PETscan yet.

Re: Persistent Sore Throat

Hi how hot is that cup of tea? If it is too hot it can irritate the throat and make it more susceptible. Also How much sugar is used? I would not use much honey. When singing a full breath needs to be taken before sound so the vocal cords do not need to strain so much.

General health measures are also useful. Is a daily walk taken out in sunshine and fresh air?

I know about the lemon but are grapefruits, limes, potatoes with skins and other foods with natural vitamin C used? These can often help to lessen potential for infection in the opinion of some.
