Am I healing at the right rate for broken ribs?

I didn't know where else to put this, so if it's the wrong place I'm fine with a mod moving it. It didn't really seem to qualify as a bone disorder.

I broke my ribs in a snowmobiling accident 5 weeks ago. I was in serious pain for the first 10 days after the accident. Afterward, it was significantly better but still pretty painful. The problem is I don't feel I've made additional progress. I am still in pretty serious discomfort. Taking a deep breath hurts. Sneezing hurts. Coughing hurts. When I lay down in bed it hurts a LOT for a couple minutes until my ribs relax into that new position, and when I roll over to a new position it's the same thing. I am unable to lay on a hard surface, even a carpeted floor. It's like having a hot poker shoved in my ribs.

Is this normal? I was told 4-6 weeks to be completely healed. I'm on week 5, and haven't noticed any improvement since week 2.

Should it still hurt this much?

Specifically I'd like to hear from other people that broke their ribs. How long did it take you to heal?

Re: Am I healing at the right rate for broken ribs?

I've never had broken ribs, but I remember my grandfather once fell off a horse and broke two ribs and he said it seemed to take forever to heal. Of course he was no spring chicken when it happened and maybe didn't heal as fast as other. I would suggest you do everything you can to improve your immune system and therefore your healing abilities.

I've never had any broken bones (unless the foot I stubbed on my bed post is now broken), but I would suggest maybe resting more? It usually helps heal a lot of stuff.
