Kidney infection without a fever?

Hi everyone. I am having really bad back pain, down in the lower area just above my butt. It's especially worse on my left side. I also have to pee all the time. Several weeks ago, I also had some random strange pains on my left side, kind of like a "catch", but I wasn't worried that it could be a heart issue, because it seemed kind of muscular, i.e., when I moved it got worse.

I looked up the symptoms of a kidney infection, but all sources indicate "fever" and I definitely don't have a fever.

Has anyone heard of one having a kidney infection without a fever? I hate to go to the doctor for this if it's just a back thing. I didn't obviously injure my back recently, but this has been getting worse over the past few weeks.

Thanks.

Re: Kidney infection without a fever?

Yes it is possible to have either a kidney infection or urinary tract infection with no fever. Many years ago I had one with absolutely no other signs besides a nasty backache. I thought nothing of it as I have back problems anyway.

Only reason I even went to the Dr. was after coming home from work and eating supper I had the urge to urinate but couldn't and when I finally did it had blood in it. I called my Dr. who sent my hubby to the pharmacy for an antibiotic and was told to see him in the a.m. He did a urine culture and told me he was shocked I had no symptoms as I must have had this for at least a month as my urine was very cloudy. I saw absolutely no signs of it.

If it keeps up I would have it checked out. Good luck...JJ...

Re: Kidney infection without a fever?

Thanks JJ. Bright red blood? I haven't seen any blood, but then again, it's hard to bend over to look closely...that's how much my back hurts.

I made an appointment to get it checked tomorrow. I can't stand going to the doctor, but better safe than sorry, I suppose.

Re: Kidney infection without a fever?

Symptoms can definitely vary, so I'd look into it! When I had a urinary tract infection (well a couple of them actually), I always had a very sharp pain when urinating and I'd see just a tiny bit of blood after a little while. I had the constant urge to go, but very little urine. My lower stomach area felt sore and bloated. Although I had a very sharp pain (like a needle was jabbed in there!), I've heard of some people who feel minimal pain and instead feel other symptoms and just general aching in their belly or lower back. Same goes for the fever - you might or might not have one. I typically hear that some people get a kidney infection after they go too long with a urinary tract infection. Just to be on the safe side, I'd see a doctor soon and have them check for you. They definitely get worse the longer you wait, so the sooner the better so you can feel better soon!

Re: Kidney infection without a fever?

louisamae..Yes it was bright red, not much so trust me if you had any you would see it. Like I said, mine had to be with me long before I got the worst symptoms. I never had one before so guess I didn't see any warning signs, but then again I just had the lousy backache.

Glad your going to the Dr. Please keep us posted...JJ..
