Unhappy 10 months after flu - still feel awful..

I got the flu on December 17th 2010 and didn't 'recover' till mid January. The longest I have ever been ill in my life (21 year old male). Two weeks after 'recovering' I got tonsillitis which lasted around a week.

Everything cleared up and I finally felt OK, nothing massively noticeable about my health stood out. Then one day in March this year I woke up after a night of drinking and found that I was off balance, I thought the alcohol hadn't worn off yet but I have basically felt that way ever since. It's now October and it is depressing me that I still feel like this. Weak, tired, chest and back pain. It is horrible.

I had anti-biotics for 2 weeks at the end of April after visiting a local walk in medical centre. She said I had fluid behind my ear drum. After taking them I felt better but only for 2 weeks...

I went the doctor and told her about my body feeling weaker and more tired than usual. I also told her about my chest pains and just feeling like crap in general. She had my bloods done, said I had neutropenia (low white blood cells) but only by a margin. She also had me take an ECG and I wore a heart monitor for 5 days due to feeling palpitations.

Everything came back normal.

Few more weeks went on and I started to get headaches and randomly hot. I went back to the doctor and told them that I have had constant ear infections for about a year and I was sent to see a vestibular specialist. There I was told I have a hole in my ear which needed surgery to stop me from getting infections, it was also hinted that the ear has something to do with the balance. So I was hoping the surgery would solve this balance issue and me feeling like crap 24/7.

This is one month after surgery and I still feel the same. I'm starting to think that whatever that flu was at Christmas has truelly messed me up and I will never feel the same again.

I feel like I have had every symptom under the sun!
-Weak, tired, fever, headaches, hot, chest pain, back pain, nothing looks how it use to, which is hard to explain.

It also makes me wonder that it can't be that bad, whatever it is because I have gone through surgery under general anesthetic for 4 hours and survived.

At the moment I just have constant chest pain and weak feeling, along with my vision just not seeming right. I'm just like... is this it? going to have to live the rest of my days feeling like this!?

Starting to go insane and ask myself am I actually feeling this, or is it my brain...omg I could go on forever.

ANY IDEAS WHAT ON EARTH COULD HIT ME 10 MONTHS AGO AND STILL BE GIVING ME PROBLEMS?

I am really sorry you're still not feeling well. I've had the flu last February and I'm still coughing (not the same symptoms as you have). Have you had a chest Xray to make sure your lungs are okay? What about pneumonia? Give your ears a little bit more time to heal. Having inner ear problems will definitely affect your balance. I know sometimes I feel overwhelmed too because I want to get better right away. I have to let my body heal and with me thinking of all the problems I have all at once just makes me panicky. While you're healing, rest and get plenty of sleep. And of course, nutritious food.

Do ask the doctor about the possibility of pneumonia or lung infection. Good luck and hang in there. Let us know how it goes.

Re: 10 months after flu - still feel awful..

Thanks for the reply. My next health appointment is on the 18th of November to take a look at my ear and see how it is healing up. They said if all is well, then I will most likely be discharged.

I haven't had an coughing for months but I do rarely get the feeling that I need to clear my chest.

Since my last post my symptoms have once again changed up. Now I have very short lasting headaches at the top of my head. I feel tired most of the day and my brain just doesn't seem to be working how it used to. Sentences are becoming more strange to me. When I am speaking I find myself starting sentences again and words have become more tongue twisting. Typing and thinking seems to be normal but my speech seems slightly off and it is concerning me. I don't know if it's because of the constant thought of being ill or that I may have something wrong up there. Brain just feels tired basically.

I have forgotten what it feels like to be 'normal' and it leaves me worried all the time.

I think I shall wait till after I have been discharged from the hospital about my ear and then make yet another trip to the doctors to try and find out what on earth is happening to me.

Re: 10 months after flu - still feel awful..

Hi moose, my situation is slightly different from you but i know the toll pain and sickness takes on you. All my life ive been sick. When i was 15 i was admitted to hospital with pnemonia where i was in there for 2mths after complications arose. I got better but for the next 5 years was ill on and off. Doctors thought that i may have chronic fatigue as it always took twice as long to recover after each illness. When i was 21 i became very ill for approx 12mths. I became very depressed and it reached the point where i was seriously wanting to end it. I slowly became better and resumed my life, although the illness left me having to go through life a little slower. With much management i managed to get a law degree and a masters degree and work in law. 10 days ago i was struck down with a virus. It was very severe. For the first day i cried as i had not felt this sick for 7 years. For 4 days i did not sleep due to being in severe pain. I started to feel like i did 7 years ago. For 8 days i had to stay in my room as i simply could not deal with anyone or anything due to being in so much pain. On the 9th day im starting to recover. My point is that u can hang in there. I have been to the darkest places you can imagine and have been faced with the choice of either ending it or hanging in there and having a life. I went to the doctors this time he said i needed to slow down after i get better. For the last 3 years i have been pursuing a film career as a producer. When i was sobbing cause i couldnt lie down or sleep due to being in severe pain, the thing that got me through was that 8mths ago i received a producers award for best emerging talent as a young producer and by hell i am not going to lose my career due to my illness. I know that my illness is short compared to yours but u can get through this. And u will live an ordinary life again and do everything u were supposed to do in your life.

Moose, As I was reading your post, I was thinking the same thing that "iWillGetWell" said regarding Lyme. I've had constant ear pressure, but now ear infections or hole in my ear. How in the world did a hole get there? My son is 29 and right behind me with symptoms, I had hoped to get this all figured out by the time my kids were grown, but he had repeated ear infections as a child, he'd get over one, only to get anther. We had tubes put in his ears twice. I worked for an insurance company at the time. Tons of kids were getting it done, whereas, the generation before tonsils were being yanked out. Instead of figuring out the source of issue...doctors just want to yank something out or give you a pill for the symptoms that causes more problems. Moose, don't get discouraged...these are different times...there is much information now, and many of us and YOU will get better. Do read about Lyme Disease. Everytime they say your tests were "fine", get them in your hand and keep them. What one doc says "fine' could be on the low end and mean something to another doctor. Look up parasites, too. They can zap all of your energy and cause many of these symptoms. I live in a warm climate, and (used to) go barefoot a lot.

Iwillgetwell, what caused your hole in your ear?

S209, Sounds like you are a very driven person. I am (was) too. There are soooo many people with these same symptoms! Just on this site, they're under: Lyme, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Heart (POTS), MS...and people are desperate. Someone has got to figure out the connection and find the source! Doctors don't take us seriously, because we "look fine"...it is a shame! We are smart enough to figure this out!! I'm sure of it! Good luck!

Re: 10 months after flu - still feel awful..

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have looked into the Lyme's disease theory and I suppose it could be a possibility. I have a cat, a back garden and there is often squirrels running about. So maybe a tick could of bitten me.. I don't know. Have never noticed any bites or rashes.

My #1 enemy at the moment is feeling tired but I am not exhausted. I manage to keep myself awake for about 14-16 hours a day. Still with the chest pain though. It is getting less often and is not a terrible pain, just very noticeable.

I was stretching to get something today and the left side of my chest felt like it was over stretched but clearly wasn't. I then got a pain when adjusting my posistion while seated. Very sudden and sharp but only lasted a few seconds.

It's just very confusing all these symptoms I've had over the months. At the moment I don't feel too bad but not 100% either.I walk long distances and I just have no idea what it is.

My ear seems to be healing OK. Scar and a bit deaf but I still have stuff inside the ear. It feels blocked up.

I really don't know what to think of this. So many things have crossed my mind during the last few months of what it could be. Post viral fatigue, ear infections that have caught up with me, immune system damage.. I could think of more if I could be bothered thinking back. One thing I know I have/had is Neutropenia, which is a lack of white blood cells (protecting cells). I was told I have it mildly by my GP, way back in April.

Thing is.. I don't know if I'm getting better or just getting used to feeling like this. I have good days and bad days, different feelings and different symptoms. I'll keep you updated.

You sure it wasnt or isnt mono, ebv can cause lots of symptoms for the first year at a minimum. We used coconut oil capsules here, monolauric acid in them and they are antivirals. Very hepful. Will make you use the bathroom though. Look up mono or epstein barr virus.

Re: 10 months after flu - still feel awful..

Not sure about that one. I've been with my girlfriend for 2 and a half years and she is perfectly healthy, where as I am the opposite. Eating food fine, not frequently enough but I have had no loss of appetite.

Currently I feel slightly dizzy (have done since March), chest pain in my middle rib area and left corner of my chest and some pain on the left side of my back, shoulder blade area and short headaches all around my head now and again. The pain isn't terrible by any means but it's very noticeable and is making me think I'm dying slowly...

I've felt like this for so long that I am just so used to it. Just trying to live my life as normal as possible and cut down on the moaning.

Their is definitely something wrong with me. I won't let anyone convince me other wise!

I have not had a chest X-ray but now that I have read about how Pneumonia can go unnoticed it has brought it to my attention that this could be a possibility... especially with me feeling like this for such a long time. Chest rumbles and pain, general discomfort in that area.

I have had very sharp pains in my ribs when breathing in at some point over the months, about 2 or 3 times. It does not happen that often.

Thanks for posting this, I need to make an appointment as soon as possible. I feel so desperate for an answer!
