Lump Near Right Carotid Artery
I noticed a lump near my carotid artery (where one would feel for carotid pulse) about 8 months ago. I assumed it to be a swollen lymph node as I had had numerous respiratory tract infections and sore throats.
Each time I mentioned it to my doctor, I described it as a swollen lymph node. Each time my doctor examined my neck, he had me face forward, and he would feel around for my lymph nodes. I never really felt him palpate over the area of the lump. The only time I can feel the lump is when I extend my neck, but they never examine me in that position. It's really strange because each time I mention it, they refuse to examine my neck with my neck extended. I always figure out they know what they're looking for, but they always insist on examining me with my head in neutral position.
There have been two or three times in the past eight months where it has swollen with pain almost to my Adam's apple. I feel the pain when I rotate my head and when I extend it. The pain is often accompanied by pain under the collar bone extending about an inch down and extending laterally out towards underarm.
The pain feels to be internal like bronchitis although it seems to be a little high on the chest. It feels sometimes that I can press down on the outside to give some relief to the pain inside.
I saw my GP. I self referred to ENT and also saw an oncologist. I also saw a second ENT. I have also had my rheumatologist feel around the area. I see a rheumatologist since I have been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome (sicca complex +ANA w/o lip biopsy).
I think it could be a carotid body tumour, but none of the doctors I've seen seem to be concerned.
