If you had internal bleeding, you're red blood cells would be lowered significantly
This is classic iron deficiency. Remember, you can have iron deficiency and have pretty bad symptoms without being anemic. Your level was 20, which is pretty low. Mine was around 50 and my hemoglobin had dropped down to 12-something and he put me on iron supplements right away
When you say you don't want to take iron for the rest of your life, why? If it is keeping you alive and all it takes is swallowing a pill, why would that be a problem? There are a lot of us who suffer from multiple health issues and taking a pill is the least of our problems, as long as they don't cause serious side effects. Most patients tolerate iron supplements very well, I've never had any issues
