Itching and dementia

Mom is 89 ... Diagnosed with moderate altz 5 yrs ago...on Exelon patch and taking namenda. Since April has had periodic (as in days) episodes of itching, w/ no visible rash, accompanied by sobbing. Itching seems localized on her back. I have used lotions, powders, antihistomines, oatmeal baths etc and nothing will stop the itching. She scratches until she has welts. Anyone else having this problem? Needless to say, this is maddening for her and me.
Thanks
