Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

Well, I still have not gotten another period since I stopped Yasmin. My last pill was on April 19 and I got my period on 4/22 (during week 4 of my last pack). I haven't had one since. Also, I have been off Yasmin for about 6 weeks now and the hair loss has been getting worse. Yesterday after my shower, I probably lost about 200+ hairs. I am seeing a derm. physican's assistant on Thursday. I know they will likely attribute my hair loss to stopping the pill or STRESS. I know its not my thyroid, an autoimmuine disease or lupus, because the tests came back normal. Is it possible for me to request that they check my hormones? Or is it too soon, because I have just stopped Yasmin 6 weeks ago? If the hair loss is normal after stopping bcp, how long should this last? I am totally freaking out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thursday is only one day away (I know, a long day away). The only suggestion I have for you is to contact Berlex, the makers of Yasmin, and see what they have to say. Trust me, if you email them you will get a prompt reply!

Sounds like a post partum hair loss. Not saying you are or were pregnant. When you are pg, you don't loose hair as frequently. You start losing hair pp though because the hormones aren't there anymore.

It could be that you are having hair loss because of the cessation of the hormones from the BCP. The dermatologist might be able to answer your question about how long it will last.

As for your period returning, it could take several weeks. The bleeding you had post pill was not ovulatory bleeding. Call your health care provider if you go a few more weeks without AF. Progesterone will bring it on within 2 weeks of taking it.

Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

Thanks for the replies. I totally feel like I have been going crazy sinc I stopped the pill. I stopped taking Yasmin, because I felt sick all the time. The first year was fine, but got progressively worse, but of course all the doctors said IT COULD NOT be the Yasmin. But coincidentally, my blood pressure (on Yasmin, 145/90- off Yasmin, 105, 70) and rapid heart rate has decreased substantially (resting heart rate while on Yasmin, 95- off of Yasmin about 70) after being Yasmin. Also, my cholesterol has decreased from 246 (moderately high) to 198 (within the nornal range) since being on and stopping Yasmin and I have made no dietary changes. I have noticed some other changes as well, but not sure if they can be attributed to Yasmin. HOwever, because most of my tests have come back normal (thyroid, lupus, autoimmune), I am certain that the hair loss has increased due to discontinuing Yasmin, which I am assuming is common when stopping any brand of birth control pills- I HOPE!!! It has only been 6 weeks since I stopped, but am wishing it has been 6 months. I read somewhere that hair loss can last from anywhere between 3-6 months after stopping birth control and take up to one year to be replaced. Sheesh! What we women have to go through!!!

Well, I am seeing the derm. physician assistant tomorrow. Is there anything I should specifically ask about my hair loss? Like i mentioned in a previous posting, the thyroid, lupus and autoimmune tests all came back normal, so are there any other tests I should ask or look out for??? Thanks

Unhappy Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

Seems that strange things happen sometimes when you stop bcp. I'm having my own dilema, but you might want to check your hormones because they can't be off and throw other things off too. I've been off since early March and haven't had a period since then either. So it could take you a while. I'm experiencing strangly distributed weight gain and high blood sugar and other odd things. I guess these are the things they DON'T tell you about, sometimes I just think that it sucks being a woman!

Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

So the derm. physican assistant didn't think I needed to have my hormones checked like I wanted. He feels that my hair loss is possibly due to seborrheic dermatitis, stopping my birth control (yasmin) 6 weeks ago and of course, STRESS. Doctors always manage to throw stress in there somehow. He wants me to follow up with him in 2 months. I just hope my hair lasts that long. I also have an appt with my GYN next week (annual exam). I get to tell her that I stopped Yasmin, which she has encouraged me to stay on due to my bad periods (irregular, severe cramps). Anyway, I wish I had never started Yasmin to begin with. My body is so damaged (anxiety, stomach problems, skin problems, no period, painful intercourse, hair problems, etc.)! I am taking a multivitamin. Any advice as to what else I can do to help with my withdrawls from stopping Yasmin?

Ask your doctor if you can try another birth control pill. Maybe that will help.

Hiya,

I'm 28 and I have had gradual hair thinning since 21. I stopped taking the pill because it gave me migraines and since i've stopped I've been feeling nauseous and dizzy. Also like you I haven't had a period since Feb.

I recently had blood tests for my hormone levels....and they revealed that I've got a slightly high level of testosterone. I kind of knew all along that the hair loss was not normal.
My doctor is going to get a second opinion to see if I need to take anything. I hope they can lower my testosterone.
You need to push the doctors and don't let them pass you off with stress. Stress can make it worse, but it's not the only cause. I hope this helps, and I'll let you know what happens.

Sun-moon

Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

Hi,

I totally agree with you on that most doctors like to pass it off as stress. I had the same problem with hair loss from Depo. I saw my obgyn and she said it could be related but also stress. Also saw a Derm. and he just passed me off as normal hair loss. It's not normal to loss so much hair so quickly. I did a lot of reseach and found out that depo does cause hair loss and so do a lot of other bc pills. I suggest seeing a Endo. specialist. They will do all the blood work and see if you have a hormone inbalance. I'm seeing one in 2 weeks. Good luck!

Yes like Jenn1v says, and endocrinologist is the best one to see, they'll check ALL levels of everything, I'm having a time with the docs. as they try to pass me around and off as being stressed and all, of course I'm stressed now, who wouldn't be and as for them connecting the dots to the pill, they'll never do it.

Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

I actually saw an endocrinologist informally (my mom works for my HMO, so I saw the endo without a referral or appt) a few weeks ago and she ran some tests to check for lupus, an autoimmune disease, thyroid problems or any other cause for my constant muscle pains or hair loss. Everything except for my potassium and BUN (both were low) came back normal. My muscle pains have been attributed to my low potassium which they attributed to stopping the Yasmin. However, there was no mention of the hair loss. I am thinking that the endo. did not really follow up with me, because it was not an offical visit. Plus she did not check my hormones (estrogen, testosterone, etc.). I am just hoping that my hormones are temporarily out of whack, because I stopped the Yasmin 6 weeks ago and my body is adjusting. I am having so many horrible problems since I stopped Yasmin- hair loss, skin problems (acne, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, splotchiness, etc), no period, leg cramps, etc. I have also noticed a lot of swollen lymph nodes in my groin area. But since I stopped Yasmin, I haven't had nausea, headaches, and my blood pressure and heart rate have decreased. I am just hoping that I don't get my period next week, because then I will have to cancel my annual pap with my GYN and it so hard to get an appt. Anyway, Since I have an appt with my GYN next week, should I ask that my hormones be tested (especially since the derm didn't do it)? I just need to make sure that nothing serious is wrong. Any more advice???

Re: Freaking out!!! Still no period and excessive hair loss after stopping Yasmin...

Definitely get your hormones tested. The endo did the entire thing for me and all the hormones associated with fertility and normalcy came back low, sugar level was high, insulin low and prolactin high, which all went out of whack with discontinuing the pill and I figure that my body is having the time trying to get back to normal but while that happens my whole body is going thru it, top heavy weight gain and all kinds of cellulite like I've never had before, it is really affecting my self esteem among other things, this is now just about week 12 so you see how long you might have to wait. But hopefully you might be lucky and ovulate and sort the mess out, I'm still hoping for myself
