Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Hi! I have not posted in a long time, but i am back with a question. I was posting a few months ago when I was going through IVF until I got very ill. I developed SEVERE ovarian hyperstimulation and ended up hospitalized and in the intensive care unit with liters of fluid in my abdomen, liver failure, kidney failure, and a lot of other side effects. It is a miracle that I made it through. I am very blessed that before I got sick they collected many, many eggs and I ended u with 12 embryos. Now that I am healthy again I can try to have a baby again. I am now taking meds to induce a period and start the implantation process. It has been a crazy journey and I am happy to be alive and well now. I am truly blessed to be alive and well now. Of everything that happened there is just one lasting side effect and I am wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem...

A few weeks after my hospitalization for OHSS I started to lose my hair and now about 2 months later I am still losing clumps of hair everyday and I have less than 1/4th of my original hair. I am officially going bald all over. Has anyone experienced this? If so, what have you done for it? Does it stop?

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Hi Soleilrae Wow you have really had a rough time, Ive had OHSS but no where near as bad as yours, Im asuming the hair falling out has something to do with your hormone levels as I have heard of women who are pregnant losing their hair and your hormone levels would have been very high when your were hyperstimulating which could be contributing to the hair loss although I would definately speak to your DR/RE about it to make sure nothing else is going on.
Its great that you have 12 embies waiting for you, I never got to do a fresh transfer either due to OHSS and I will be doing my 3rd FET within the next week sometime then its on to the dreaded TTW.

Wishing you all the best.

Re: Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Cashahn,
Thanks so much for the reply. You are probably right about the hormones and the hair loss. I just hope that it stops sometime soon. I asked my RE about it and he said that he is unsure of exactly why it happens or how to stop it.

You are on your third FET? Have any of them been successful in the past? I am wondering what my chances are of getting pregnant from FET. I am soo ready for this. I truly know now (after almost dying) how precious life is and I would love to bring a little life into this world.

Re: Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Soleilrae I unfortunately havent had a successful FET as of yet, but there have been many people on these boards who have gotten pregnant with FET's, I am in Australia and they have strict laws on how many embryo's are put back so the 1st transfer only one was put back and the 2nd transfer I had two put back and I will put back two this transfer which will be on Saturday, I think in America they are alot more aggressive with there transfers and will put back 3 or 4 in a transfer. Do you know how many you will put back?

Re: Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Cashahn,

So, did you do the transfer? How did it go? I hope that everything went well. I look forward to hearing about any positive results that you have.
I went to my appt today with REI and I am now on estrogen. I will start my progesterone probably next week and then transfer 2 embryos the week after that. Hopefully this whole process will have no complications.

Best of luck!

Re: Severe OHSS and Hair loss

Yep I had the transfer last week, unfortunately I dont think I will have any positive news to post as I am positive it will be a BFN. I think I have some kind of auto-immune disorder or natural killer cells that kill the embryo's, my RE will be testing me for this if I get one more BFN after this one.

I wish you all the best for your cycle and I hope that you keep us updated on your progress.
