This is an update in case anyone out there is experiencing the same problem.
I had some laproscopic surgery last October. Immediately upon waking after the surgery, I was losing hair like crazy. It continued for just over four months. Every morning when I washed my hair, I would have repeated handfuls of hair come out. I wasn't even pulling on it, just running my hand through my hair.
My surgeon and PCP both said that anesthesia wasn't a cause of the hair loss, but that the shock to the body of the surgery could result in the hair loss. My hairdresser said it was the anesthesia. The internet medical websites said that hair typically falls out about 3 months post-surgery. Whatever the cause, it was a completely unexpected side effect. My hair thinned out quite a bit and I had to change styles for a while. Thankfully it was thick to begin with and will eventually grow back to "normal" if a bit grayer.
I am now 7+ months post surgery and have a bunch of inch long hairs sprouting up throughout my head.
For anyone else out there worried about hair loss after surgery, I hope my experience helps. The hair does grow back eventually.
